I have given this restaurant 3 stars due to its delicious food. But sadly i could not rate it any higher due to a number of issues. We were a booking for 11 people. We had to decide on our meals in the week prior to the dinner and let them know a day in advance. Despite doing this, dinner service was a mess. 11 people ordered 6 entrees and 11 mains. Mains got put together on same plates but seating only allowed 4 people to sit at same table. So in the end, there were 2 people who didnt have meals delivered. By the time the staff asked if "that was everything" and we told them 2 people still didnt have meals, the doubled up plates had already been pretty much finished. The food is brilliant. The seats themselves are comfortable but they do not accomodate "bigger" people. They also didnt have wheel chair or walker access and my elderly Mother had great difficulty walking up and down the steep rickett steps.
This eatery is a great spot for mobile, average sized people who want a unique setting in a quiet booth.
It is not recommended for large groups. We spent over $500 and it was not a relaxing or enjoyable experience. Food delicious though. Staff have very limited English and unfortunately made executive decisions about serving without consultation. After the waitress asked how we wanted the entrees, we asked for all the meals to be plated separately. I suspect it got lost in translation. It made no sense to create share platters for a group of 11 people when there were no large tables available to use in that setting. Very awkward. The stairs and decking are very old and uneven. Watch your step...
Read moreIf you like something a bit quirky and novel, this place is definitely worth a visit. An old train carriage, transformed into a cafe/restaurant, in the heart of beautiful McLaren Vale (a location which is worth a trip in itself). What a delight to sit in the carriage seats - still largely in it's original style with metal baggage nets up above, and the the original old windows to look out of - an be served delicious Japanese plum wines and fabulous sushi rolls and tempura. The menu is a little limited (understandable given the limited space and kitchen facilities) and the drinks, particularly the plum wine, and some main meals are a little expensive. However the freshness, taste and quality of the food is great!
It's still reasonably new-ish so there is room for improvement with some things (extending the menu, temperature regulating, rebuilding the surrounding wooden decking and steps which feel a little old, creaky, and in need of re-doing). But this is a great idea and wonderfully executed, and the young team who run the place are friendly, helpful, and dynamic. Definitely worth supporting with a visit or return visit for something different and to...
Read moreIntimate restaurant located in a very old train carriage. You get to sit in a original train booth with comfy seats and wonder about all the different people that rode on the train many years ago. Food was absolutely delicious. Everything tasted lovely and fresh. Portions were generous. Husband and wife team running the restaurant were delightful. Kitchen is located at one end of the carriage where you enter the restaurant. For such a little kitchen the chef sure does produce very tasty food. Did not have to wait long for our meal. Shared three dishes at lunch time, Karaage Chicken (sorry, couldn't wait to dig in so picture only shows the last piece), Prawn and Vegetable Tempura (includes two prawns) and Chicken Teriyaki. Yum Yum Yum. Couldn't stop thinking of the lovely flavours long after we left. Would've gone back the next day if I didn't already have plans. Can't wait to try some of the other menu items on a future visit. Meal cost $68 for our three choices, small rice...
