An experience NOT TO BE missed while spending time in McLaren Vale. FULL STOP.
Hosts Dhar & Georgia where welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable about their vino suggestions as well as other experiences in the region. Christian and I are both small business operators in Cairns with hospitality backgrounds and understand the value that stems from locals supporting locals. We took their local advice (despite our google and online suggestions) and were overwhelmed by the amazing experiences that followed.
We absolutely loved the antipasto platters they served. They offered high quality products (prosciutto and bloody excellent pate) in large portions served in a comfortable outdoor setting surrounded by lavender plants, wine barrels and large shaded trees. There was a beautiful smoking area which we appreciated, and the service was on point with laughter, passion and a memorable home feel.
Alpha Box and Dice was a highlight of our quick trip and we would strongly suggest a visit. The wines are interesting and off the mainstream winery path. The smiles are all the proof you need.

Read moreOk, I am truly sorry but we went there with my wife based on the Google reviews and I honestly don't understand how people can qualify this winery as good or even great.
I come from Europe and since moving to Adelaide we have experienced great wines but here, the tasting of 6 wines was just horrible. I mean, not one wine tasted good. On the positive note, the interior is really great in terms of decoration but go there only if you like wines that taste like vinegar. I mean , even the last one to be tested, a special Shiraz 2019... we were hoping that one would save the tasting. but.... NO! I didn't finish any of the 6 wines for tasting and only had one tiny sip of each, which was enough to put me off.
And don't get me started on the "food platter" that they have for 50 dollars. It is more of a tiny cheese platter and really not worth the price. All in all, yeah they think they have a cool concept of having one wine associated with each letter of the alphabet but honestly they should focus on first trying to get 1 or 2 wines right before getting excited about making so many...
Read moreI visited alpha box and dice a couple of times in 2016(ish) and was a huge fan. I visited again twice in the last week (2021) and was disappointed both times. The staff (in particular the male covid marshall) were rude and seemed to have little interest in providing a tasting or food options at times when it was mildly busy, or they were remotely close to closing. It felt like our attendance was an inconvenience both times. When we asked about the other great wineries in the area the covid marshall had little knowledge of other wineries or the significance of the area in general. In my earlier visits the staff had a great understanding of the surrounding area and could identify the differences in the ABD wines compared to the traditional wineries of the region. I think the wine and setting are still great, but are let down by some of the staff/management that are running it on a day...
