As of this posting, January 2021, having just reopen in recent weeks after the massive bush fires in early 2020 that almost took out the entire area and the year in Covid 2020. Lucky at least the Royal cave survived fires and we were able to venture through. All the other caves where still closed due to the fire's. We travelled up from Paynesville for about 1 hours drive on very scenic road, abilet the regrowth coming through in some parts from the fires. The camp grounds and surrounds at cave grounds are beautiful, a picnic can be had afterwards with all amenities. Lucky the fires did not touch the camp grounds or Tourism buildings. The walk to cave from tourism building as mentioned by others is a fairly flat simple 500 Metes to entrance. Our guide Dale was fabulous. Very informative and was not enough time to share all the information. Ask lots of questions and very great responses. The Royal Cave is amazing, some tight spots to get through, skinny in some and having to duck low in others. No worries. No need to get on hands and knees. The formations inside the cave are specutular and history amazing. We had a party of 10 due to covid and feel this is the appropriate size, allowing time for all to view each spot and ask questions. Time to get through will vary depending on who is in the group. Eg if you some very slow people. You can see one of the other connecting cave-Federation Cave towards the end of the Royal Cave tour. Be interesting to travel that and see how they join from different perspectives. Overall, very very interesting and throughly enjoyed by my two young adult children and myself. Can't wait for the other...

Tour date and time - 24 Feb, 2025 ; 3:00 pm

Went with my wife and was much looking forward to this. Our tour guide turned my experience upside down when he snapped on me and came towards me aggressively, the only thing he didn’t do was attack me.

I was pretty close up next to him with everyone lagging behind, at one moment I misunderstood his instructions. Shockingly I saw him rushing towards me with finger pointing out , swearing words.

I was initially in a shock, but I explained to him for next couple of minutes about how this is simply a misunderstanding. Even apologised! Least he could do towards the end was apologise as well but he maintained his arrogant atttitude.

I wish I knew his name to lodge...

Royal Cave is easily accessed from the car park along Caves Rd about 500 metres from the information / ticket office. The cave is still active & has some really great structures to see. We drove up from Lakes Entrance and it's a easy 1 hour drive to the park entrance. The drive is scenic and enjoyable with very little traffic on the road. The Royal Cave tour is about an hour long, it's relaxed and the cave guide Andrew was informative and happy to answer any questions. Our tour only had 5 on it & this was a bonus,I'm sure if there were a larger group hearing some of the information & seeing some of the features would have...

My fiancé and I recently visited the Royal Caves after exploring the Fairy Cave, and we really enjoyed our experience. Our tour guide was friendly and accommodating, allowing us plenty of time to take photos along the way. The Royal Caves are definitely the easier option compared to the Fairy Cave, making it a great choice for those looking for a more relaxed visit. Although we could only explore half of the cave due to maintenance at the entrance, it was still fascinating. Both caves offer unique attractions and experiences, so I highly recommend visiting both if you have the chance. Overall, it was a lovely outing at the Royal Caves!

500m of pure magic! Who would guess what beauty lies below their feet.... apparently a few clever people as early as the mid 1800s. A gentle decline by concrete ramp into the cave. A fair bit if ducking required and some narrow sections. From the end of the ramp, along the entire walk there are stunning scenes. Stalagmites, stalactites, helictites (looks like noodles on the roof), flowstone and shawls everywhere. 'Fairy Dust' that glitters. Even some old steps are turning into flowstone. One of the most impressive caves we have visited. Truly worth a visit!
