I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Buchan Caves Reserve Visitor Centre, and I must say, it was an absolutely fantastic experience! From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the superb parking area, which was spacious and well-maintained.

Upon entering the Visitor Centre, we were warmly greeted by the friendly staff, who efficiently processed our tickets and provided us with a brief overview of the cave tour. The ticket prices were very reasonable:

Adults: $23.50 Concessions: $18.50 Children aged 5-15: $13.50 Families: $60.00 (2 adults & up to 3 children under 16)

Our guide was exceptional! They provided an excellent explanation of the caves, their history, and the fascinating process of how they were formed. The guide's passion and knowledge were evident throughout the tour, and they happily answered all our questions.

The cave tour itself was breathtaking. The stunning rock formations, the intricate limestone features, and the eerie underground atmosphere all combined to create an unforgettable experience. Always remember you need to walk and climb steps a lot to reach the starting point of caves. Also, there are very narrow and a bit difficult pathways inside the caves even though it's bit difficult, it's a great experience.

After the tour, we took advantage of the excellent facilities, including the clean and well-maintained toilets.

Overall, our visit to the Buchan Caves Reserve Visitor Centre was a resounding success. The combination of knowledgeable guides, stunning natural beauty, and excellent facilities makes this a must-visit destination for anyone interested in caves, geology, or just exploring the great outdoors.

Don't miss this...

So the camp sites were pretty simple but had evereything you needed. I went with my family and an aunt and uncle. We had high hopes when we arrived and thought it was going to be amzing. My mother had wanted to go and she said it looked amzing , in the photos that is. We were confused to find only a small number of parking spots in one straight line so we asked the ladies in the tiickets area if there were any other parking spots, they were nice but CLEARLY no one had any idea if there were any more spots to park.so the lady who was giving us our tickets just said they are just "off limits" WHAT? So now we had our tickets and decided to enter on of the caves wich was the biggest one called the Royal Cave. The tour giude was really nice when we said we had gotten the tickets from the tour BEFORE us. He said sorry like he actually meant it and told us we could go through anyways. The guide knew alot about the caves but it was very stuffey and cramped with so many people so they should of SPLIT the groups. The fairy cave was even WORSE with way MORE people! The guide there wasnt nice at all and when we saidthat one person wasnt going to come he grunted and looked away! HOW RUDE!! There were practicallly no restaurants to eat at, not evena cafe! So we just had to eat at a Subway close by. My aunt said she had been to the Buchan caves in Sydney and said it was fabulous! I guess they dont really care about melbournes cave.

If you are thinking of going here think again! Either go to the one in Sydney, bring your own food and just enjoy the reserve NOT the caves or just dont go at all! Spend your valluable money on somwehere or...

It's a really nice place to visit for a day out with the whole family. The park is a nice place to have a picnic and walk about on a nice sunny day. It also has facilities for barbies and camping.

The caves are a nice experience and something the whole family could enjoy. It's around a constant 17/18 degrees inside, but quite humid. There are some really nice formations inside the caves.

While the park staff were very friendly and helpful, felt that things were moving quite slow. Especially, when queuing to buy tickets, it seemed that it took a very long time to issue tickets. However, some customers asking questions and trying to decide which tickets they want once at the counter also contributes to this delay. If you are planning a visit, best would be to buy the tickets online in advance.

You can only visit the caves as part of a guided tour. While the tours were very informative and conducted in a very friendly and pleasant manner, they should consider organizing more frequent tours, at least on the busier days. We wanted to visit both caves, but due to timing of the tours, was able to visit only one of the caves (the fairy cave). If you want to visit both caves, best is to get there in time for the very first tour, which starts at 10am.

If you are planning on taking any photos inside of the caves, you are not allowed to take tripods inside. However, even if you do take one inside, most of the time there won't be enough room inside to set it up. Also, once inside the caves, be prepared for a bit of crouching and squeezing through tight spaces.

Overall, a very enjoyable experience and could be...

This afternoon, I returned to the Buchan Caves Reserve and checked out the Granite Pools Track as well as parts of Spring Creek and the Kanooka Track. It was a beautiful sunny day with a top temperature of 23 degrees. Considering I'm not really a fan of AFL footy, I figured I would do something I actually enjoy instead of watching the Grand Final. It seems quite a few people had the same idea with the main visitor carpark mostly full with tourists wanting to check out the caves. Once again, I parked my car at the Spring Creek Picnic Ground and started from there. The Granite Pools Track isn't too far from the Spring Creek Falls Walk and they do end up joining together. Granite Pools Track is quite a narrow moderate steep trail. It's mostly grass and dirt underfoot but there are some rocky sections so be prepared to do some climbing. Roughly 900m or so in, there's a junction where the track splits. I took the left path to continue to Granite Pools. Eventually, the track runs parallel to Spring Creek itself. As I mentioned in my previous blog, these tracks remind me of Freestone Creek Walking Track as well as Mitchell River Walking Track. There's large boulders and several flowing sections of water along Spring Creek. You'll need to cross over Spring Creek where the Granite Pools Track continues and joins up with Kanooka Track (Look out for the orange markers). I happened to spot a cute Swamp Wallaby in the vegetation looking for food plus a Lyrebird further along near the start of the Kanooka Track. Overall, another amazing hiking trail. It's only about 3.5km but it's very picturesque and challenging at times.

5 stars for the Royal cave, 5 stars for the guide, 5 stars for the staff at reservation center and 3 stars for services at reservation center. We went to Royal caves as recommended by the staff considering wat we had a toddler with us. They said fairy caves are little to narrow and one has to bend many a times to navigate through them. Royal caves entry point which is around 500 mts from reservation center and exit point is about 100 mts from the same. The caves were mesmerising with narrow passages leadiing to big halls, I had to duck several times. The guide was knowledgeable and explained the formation with references to the dates. Good thing was before entering the next section, he would tell us what to lookout for on the way. The caves are well lit and have proper pathway laid down for easy navigation. My claustrophobic fears came alive when the guide switched off the lights to show how dark the caves are without light. Note to visitors: 1. Temperature inside the caves naturally remains at 17 deg so dont carry your jumpers or heavy jackets. 2. Bags, tripods and big instruments are not allowed in the caves so leave them behind. 3. No food items are allowed in the caves and you wont get much to eat nearby. Eat before you get to caves road. I have bee to Genolon caves in NSW and its a totally different experience to them. Both caves are worth a visit. Highly recommended !!!
