Four days rafting the Snowy River and we were all hungry for non-dehydrated food. The Buchan Hotel was the place to be. 11 of us rocked up at 1pm and we found a very nice, modern, comfortable country hotel with a great menu. With the weather still warm, we ordered our meals and sat outside with cold beers, wine and cider to celebrate a memorable experience together as a group. The place was reasonably busy in one of the two dining areas. Outside there were a number of diners like us, enjoying a Cup Day lunch. Meals: Beef snitzel with pepper sauce, falafel salad, lamb cutlets, ABC chicken with creamy avocado and bacon sauce, panko crumbed calamari, flathead tails and parmigiana (there are quite a few to choose from on the menu). Dessert was lamingtons which the photo doesn't do justice plus someone had lemon merginue pie that was mouth watering to look at. Portion sizes were generous. Food was served quickly and with a smile from the staff. Overall the meals were good and probably tasted better because of the previous four days. Feedback from our group was generally pretty good. I found the ABC chicken sauce a little bland. Pepper sauce on the snitzel was average. Otherwise, everyone was very happy with their Cup Day lunch. Buchan Hotel is well worth a visit and is more than just a 'rural pub'. Staff were excellent and took orders quickly and cleaned away plates once completed. Definintely kid friendly. Wheelchair accessible. Clean toilets. Indoor and outdoor eating. Good parking...
Read moreWe were so excited to come to your pub. We'd seen the story about the rebuilding of the pub and the combined effort of crowd funding and locals and how it all came together to this beautiful building. We decided as we are travelling this area at the moment to celebrate my husbands birthday at your pub. We were greeted by a lovely lady as we came in and soon ordered our meals. We both decided on the reef & beef meal and had to wait a little while which didn't bother us. When the meals arrived we only had the beef part but not the reef part. We mentioned this to our waitress and after checking came back to say the sauce was coming. My husband explained that we needed another component to our meal. The waitress then took the meals back, didn't apologise for the error and came back a little while later with the reef part on top of the steaks. Unfortunately both our steaks were not cooked to our preferences and what was really disappointing is that the meal was incredibly salty. Not just a little bit but excessively salty. I couldn't finish my meal, my husband did but our excitement to come to your pub ended up a bit disappointing. I would have given an extra star if our waitress had at least attempted to apologise or at least smiled once. We were left feeling that is was a big inconvenience the meal had to be returned however it would have been ok if it was an enjoyable meal. Very disappointing for a pub that made such...
Read moreLovely looking place. Bar staff were super friendly. I'm finding it really hard to get my head around this though, ordered baked Salmon, asked for this with mashed potato & veg instead of chips and salad-they had a dish on the specials board with mash & broccoli- waitress immediately said they 'don't do mash', when I pointed out it was on the board she said she'd have to ask the chef. 'No' was the answer from the chef. The explanation 'it's portioned out'. Having owned restaurants and managed pubs for many years, I was dumbfounded by this. Veggies were beautifully cooked. Salmon was a little undercooked for me but then I accept it's usually cooked pink. My partners steak was closer to rare than medium but extremely tasty and a good portion size for him. NZ Sauv Blanc was delicious, beer was cold and refreshing. The kids running around the restaurant unattended and over excited wasn't ideal and really quite surprising for a country pub. The place is popular with locals which is a good sign. Clean and well looked after. Overall would recommend if you're in the area (just don't...
