Just stayed in Burra for 2 nights and decided to do the Self guided heritage passport tour , Went to the information centre to pay for key ,which was $30 for one adult ,so $60 for us ,also have to pay a $50 deposit for the key,which you get back once handing it back into information centre, The lady at the information centre (Sue) was so friendly & helpful ,made us feel very welcome to the town, The tour itself was so good ,we really enjoyed it ,learnt so much about the history of the town , would highly recommend this tour , our highlight was the unicorn brewery , also sue told us about the st marys church as well, we were in awe with the stained glass windows there ,just magical ... Read moreReally disappointing. While staying in Clare, I drove to Burra to revisit the great heritage places I recall from a visit 40 years ago. (Maybe $100 round trip for car expenses?) Only to be told there is now a charge of $30 plus $50 key deposit to visit these places. I was told the charge is for maintenance. I declined but did go to the miners' dugouts I recalled. The place is littered with broken glass and plastic and other trash that looks like it's been there some time. So I wondered where the maintenance moneys are applied. Read moreA pretty standard visitors centre. Lots of brochures and information about Burra and surrounds. The main old mining area with the refurbished Cornish beam engine houses are behind locked gates and fences. To gain access to the mine workings you need to get a key from the visitors centre. The cost is $30 per person plus a $50 returnable deposit on the key. The price is a little steep but it allows easy access to all areas by car. The issue is that it isn't enforced and when we were there the gates had been left open for anyone to come and go...
