Very interesting part of Burra history. Exterior of 4 dugouts can be seen. Apparently at the height of copper mining here there were about 1800 people ( miners and their families) living in dugouts along the banks of the creek...3 miles of them. A flood and efforts to provide better accommodation put an end to this.

Entrance to the dugout area is part if the overpriced Passport purchased in town @ $30 per adult. However there is a hole in the fence off Burra creek which is well used. Take a torch if you want to look past the cage into the room beyond. I love the Burra township and recommend it as an overnight or 2 stay.

This is part of the whole Burra Heritage Passport Tourist Drive. Compared to other site this wasn't appealing. You could see three dugouts where some miners used to live. It's quite dark so you really can't see much even with the phone torch

Cornish miners promised passage, work and housing. Many died on the trip to Burra then arrived to nothing but gruelling work. Many drowned in these dug outs after rainfall as they are in dried creek beds or died of consumption. Super interesting and heart breaking. Definately worth buying the town passport. Great idea with many spooky visits. I loved Burra. A co worker leant me a book called Burra Burra and I had to...
