Josephine’s Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage is a located in the heart of Coober Pedy, offering visitors a unique blend of art, culture, and wildlife conservation. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, thanks to the passionate owner who dedicate the time to both the gallery and the orphanage. The gallery itself showcases a stunning collection of Aboriginal art, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the region. But what truly sets this place apart is the Kangaroo Orphanage, where visitors have the chance to interact with rescued kangaroos. The orphanage cares for baby kangaroos that have lost their mothers due to accidents or other unfortunate events. Its possible to feed them and learn about their rehabilitation process is heartwarming and educational. The dedication of the owner to the wellbeing of these animals is...

Jo and Terry, who run this place, are the most wonderful people with the biggest hearts. Apart from running a gallery full of wonderful Aboriginal art and selling some opal jewellery (this is Coober Pedy, after all), they also run a kangaroo orphanage - but they'll take in any injured wildlife. They hold kangaroo talks 5.30 pm Mon-Sat, gallery opening hours depend on traffic and season. The lovely Judy also helps out with running of the gallery and caring for the joeys. There's $10 ($5 child) admittance charge but donations are very much appreciated as they don't get any government or other funding and all their money (just like any other wildlife carers in Australia) are spent on the kangaroos. Terry has an amazing knowledge of the Aboriginal art so if you want to learn a thing or three, ask him! Definitely a must if you're in Coober or just...

What an amazing place. Thorough understanding of indigenous art backed with a true passion of sharing the stories behind the pieces and their artists ... Out the back though is where the real magic is ... As soon as you walk outside you're greeted with cheeky chatty birds and an elderly kangaroo that loves wasbai peas... But then ... Slung of the shoulder of one of the nicest men in Coober Pedy, you see some paws... After a tasty bottle, she was off and hopping ... Yes she looked like a drunk woman leaving the bar at 3 am but she was as cute as a kitten in mittens... Get down there and support Josephine's ... Definately one of my favourite places in Coober Pedy, actually ... South Australia maybe even Australia...
