We have been in Deloraine for about 8 days and tomorrow ready to move on to Queenstown. The lovely gentleman who owns our Air BnB asked if we had visited the great western tiers visitor centre yet in Deloraine, which also has a folk museum. We said we hadn't got around to it yet and he highly recommended we should go. As the weather was raining again we decided to take advantage of some indoor sightseeing and walked up to the visitor centre. We are so happy that we made the effort, it was amazing and completely unexpected what we found there.
There is a self paced tour depicting times of the settlers in Deloraine, showcasing life as it would have been in the past living in a dwelling. Great artifacts and an excellent display of the utilities of that era. It was a very interesting museum with lots to see, very well presented. The highlight of this centre though was the incredible display of 4 giant historic silk curtains depicting the 4 seasons in Deloraine and surrounding villages.
These curtains are enormous and so exquisitely detailed. The 3 dimensional effects created gave texture to bark, realism to animals and people and beautifuly displays an accurate picture of Deloraine.
Taking 3 years to complete with 300 people working on the project over its creation time, both words and pictures cannot do its beauty justice. It is a must see and should not be missed by those who come to Deloraine.
Amazing and the people at the visitor centre are so friendly and super helpful and knowledgeable. Shout out here to Jennifer who was so lovely and helpful answering all of our questions as well as providing an excellent tour and explanation of the silk curtain display. Thank you Jennifer from...
Read moreThere wasn’t much to do in Hobart, I explored the north side of Tasmania, this art gallery was the highest on my list. This place was probably the worthiest location to visit in Tasmania, all the yarns were well crafted, I was simply overwhelmed by how delicate all the pieces were. I know nothing about textiles, all the arts captured my attention. Please make sure to try Tasminan ice cream before the end of the tour. I took a long bus ride to get from Hobart to Deloraine, I also went to Melita honey farm, it appeared super closer on the map, it turned out that I didn’t get any internet reception in the area and no any public transportation to reach to Launceston, thankfully I met a gracious family whom drove me to the destination, I am still warm hearted with...
Read moreHoused within the Deloraine Tourist Information Centre, the "Yarns Artwork" was a surprisingly interesting exhibit in a professional, theatre-like facility. I wasn't initially keen on having a look but still found it worthwhile and a great community effort in getting it all together. Basically, it's a tapestry depicting history and life in the town but deserves closer examination because of the detail included. After the 15-20 min "show" you can get an up close view and then also wander through the quite extensive collection of local history which is housed in the adjacent old hotel and also through the grounds. There was a small charge, I think about $8 per person or...
