At the museum, you’ll learn more about PL Travers life as well as interact with characters and settings from the movie and take part in a range of activities. It is an enchanting place to visit, particularly for families who are fans of the movie. As visitors explore each room, they are encouraged to practice the art of story writing and create their own story as they make their way through the museum. My 9yo was perhaps a little too young for this; she was much more interested in touching the various interactive exhibits on display.
The Story Bank is spread out across two levels, with 17 rooms in total to explore. Rooms include the Hallway (where you’ll find Mary Poppins, Jane and Michael sliding down the bannister), the Portico (where you’ll see the Bird Woman feeding the pigeons), the Bedroom (where PL Travers was actually born) and heaps more.
I found the museum a wonderful place. There is plenty for the kids to play with and be reminded of various scenes from the movie, but I also enjoyed learning more about the life of PL Travers herself.
As well as visiting the museum you can also take a photo with the life sized bronze statue of Mary Poppins just outside. And don’t leave before checking out the traffic lights here which have little images of the famous nanny herself. Allow around 1 hour to explore...

The Story Bank in Maryborough is such a wonderful surprise. It’s highly interactive and engaging for both kids and adults—perfect for families on the road or homeschooling. I learned so much I didn’t know, and the displays make it fun to explore and discover.
You can get through in about an hour, but if you love reading and details you could easily spend 2–3 hours here. The effort and attention to detail put into this beautiful space really shows. Staff are warm, welcoming, and make the experience even better.
Entry was $35 for the family, which felt like great value for money. I wouldn’t have paid much more given our time constraints, but for what we experienced it was spot on. The gift shop was also reasonably priced with plenty of cute and interesting things to take home.
Absolutely worth a stop—educational, inspiring, and full of magic.
Shame we couldn't stay for the Mary Poppins festival this weekend Sunday...
Read moreUnfortunately we arrived in Maryborough at 1:25pm. We were told people usual take 45-60 min to view Story Bank & last entry was 1pm as they close at 2pm. We were told we could enter but only if we paid the full $10 each after we asked if there would be any discount. Given that the streets of Maryborough lunchtime on a Friday were virtually empty we thought they should be encouraging tourists not turning us away. This seems to be the only attraction in Maryborough & it’s only open 10-2 (in reality 1!) ?????? Really disappointed we couldn’t contribute to your economy & won't be returning any...
