I recommend a visit to the town of Penguin. I stopped there twice on a recent trip, once on either end, it's in a convenient place for driving to Devonport. It's a beautiful place for a snack, a walk and some photos.

There is a really nice cafe, Penguin Country Bakehouse, a supermarket if you want to stock up before moving on and a very helpful Visitor Information Centre.

This is a town that takes it's theme and runs with it. There are penguins everywhere. On the bins, holding the litter bags and decorating stores. But The Big Penguin is the highlight and landmark of the town he's a perfect photo opportunity. Certain times of the year he's dressed up for celebrations.

The Big Penguin is located is a park with a walking path. Next to the statue is a much appreciated Tardis shaped street library. Perfect for those needing a new book. I really appreciate the children's playground with its...

A ten-minute drive west of Ulverstone will bring you to a peaceful town pressed against the coast by the wooded slopes of the Dial Range.

You don’t need sharp deduction skills to know that little penguins are plentiful on the town’s waterfront! During the breeding season from September to March, penguins come ashore in their thousands, and you take guided evening tours from Penguin Point.

To celebrate these cuties the town erected a Big Penguin in 1975, made from fibreglass and cement and standing 3.15 metres tall.

Another string in Penguin’s bow is the largest undercover market in Tasmania, trading every Sunday by tradition, but also opening on Wednesday and Saturday for...

The inhabitants of Penguin appear to have a special interest in penguins. There are various penguin-related objects to observe, as well as penguin-related sweets & desserts, & even penguin-related 'merch' from speciality penguin stores. The church was painted white & black (the colour of penguins), however I did not observe any evidence that penguins were the object of worship per se. I did not observe any real penguins in Penguin. Yet, Penguin is a quirky town, & I would opt to re-visit if the...
