It would take an exceptionally good or exceptionally bad experience for me to write a review, unfortunately in this instance, it's the latter.

Apart from the actual meals, everything was decent. We ordered and shared the empanadas, quail gnocchi, and surf and turf. The steak was so chewy, we practically had to swallow chunks and the sauce was fishy and watery (yes, we understand that is the 'surf' component, however it was not at all creamy or flavourful). This flavour overpowered everything on the plate; the baked potatoes could have been mistaken for a piece of old flake.

5 minutes after leaving the restaurant, we had to pull over on the side of the road and both my partner and I vomitted uncontrollably.

We were both so taken a back by our sudden convulsions that we asked each other if we should report this incident to some food safety body. However, we decided that this was a bit extreme so we called the establishment. We weren't calling for a refund, simply calling the establishment out of courtesy so they would be aware of a possible food safety issue in their kitchen. We politely explained our issue and the the waitress's first response was "we have never had a problem with the steak before." Failing to take responsibility is the second reason I am writing this review. She was very dismissive of the serious issue. It wasn't as if we were complaining about the steak being cooked slightly differently to how we like it, we LITERALLY threw up on the side...

El Perro is in a lovely location and the pizzas my wife and I had were quite nice. Reasonable pricing. Our only issue was the approach of senior staff to dealing with a problem. My pizza was a La Espanola which was made without the black olives that were part of the description on the menu. It could have been an oversight in a busy kitchen or they might simply have run out of olives. When I (politely) asked a junior staff member, she checked with the kitchen and came back to advise the chef said that the olives were present but on the bottom, hidden by other ingredients. The cut edges of all eight slices showed no black olives. When I asked (politely) again, a senior wait staff member appeared shortly to say the olives were definitely on the bottom of the pizza but gave me a small bowl of cold black olives ā€œin case I still wasn’t satisfiedā€. When I showed her the pizza cut edges, she could not point out a single olive. She then said ā€œI’ve asked the chef twice and I’m not going to ask him againā€. Even without the olives the pizza was reasonable but I thought the chef should have come to our table and checked for himself. I also thought the senior staff person was rude when she implied I was hard to satisfy and therefore the real problem. Even with no olives I would have rated El Perro a 4 out of 5 but the rude staff made the...

I would give a 3.5 if I had the choice. This is a nice decent venue, pretty small, and gets quite loud. The staff are very friendly and work hard to be good hosts. Some of the meals were very tasty, we did have a couple of meals that seemed to be in a fryer that the oil had been burnt in? Unfortunate, however the staff offered another dish and didn't make us pay for it, so I was impressed that they took the right path to rectify the situation. I feel like the prices were a little high for the dishes, and the tapas, whilst tasty , wasn't necessarily portion right for sharing(the point of tapas) The back ground music was bizarre(mostly an 80's, 90's mix)and not normally something I would comment on but it was just that off point I could easily give a better rating if they got their ambiance, meals/pricing polished up. I personally would go and try again. As they seemed like...

Mentally resigned to a great pub meal and good seaside takeaway, we were delighted to find this charming restaurant in the Main Street of Penguin. The Staff were friendly, helpful and efficient and we dined here twice over a week. Both nights the restaurant was crowded so reservations are suggested. The tapas were generous servings and flavourful. The Scottsdale pork belly was perfectly crisp in an excellent jus and my husbands Battered pink Ling was perfectly accompanied by sweet potato fries. Leave room for the Tasmanian cheese board , churros and sticky date pudding. The wine menu has a great selection of Tasmanian sparkling, still and even port. Great latte finished off a lovely evening. Huge fans and delighted to find this gem. The excellent jazz music and fun of watching the train was a bonus. Bravo !

Can honestly say I love this restaurant. We travelled to Tasmania from the Gold Coast. Stumbled across this restaurant in Penguin. The young staff in this restaurant could easily rival a 5 start restaurant. The cocktails are made on point and well the food is just amazing. I would actually say this restaurant could rival some of the 5 star restaurants we have eaten at. I felt like I literally had to be rolled out of there as the food was that delicious. This restaurant was the reason we stayed in Penguin a 2nd night. One tip...make a booking early as they do get booked out. Definitely worth the stop. Oh and the train passes straight through there. It is not massively noisy, nor does it stink. Very interesting though. Great for kids to see as you will see by our photos.
