South Gorge beach, next to main beach, is very attractive to families and also to board riders. The life savers have a sign at the entrance warning about the dangerous currents which force them to rescue a few swimmers every day, on average.
The current is attractive to board riders because they use it to get out to the waves quickly. But for inexperienced swimmers it can be a big shock. Also, because the beach is narrow and wedge shaped, with cliffs on either side, the water level can rise very quickly.
