Bare Island Fort is a gem for history buffs and nature lovers alike. The coastal views are absolutely stunning, especially during sunset — perfect for photography or a peaceful walk. The old bridge leading to the fort gives it a cinematic, almost otherworldly feel. No wonder it was used in Mission: Impossible 2!

The highlight of the visit is definitely the guided tour. You’ll get access to hidden tunnels, old gun placements, and fascinating stories about its role in Australia’s coastal defense history. The guides are knowledgeable and bring the place to life, making it more than “just an old fort.” There’s also something quite powerful about being in such a well-preserved site that’s seen so much over time.

That said, a few things to keep in mind: • Access to the interior is only via guided tour, which is usually only on Sundays at certain times. If you come on a weekday or miss the tour schedule, you’ll only get to see the exterior and views. • Parking can get crowded, especially on weekends, so come early if you can. • There are some stairs and uneven paths, which may be tricky for visitors with mobility issues. • Lastly, the inside of the fort is smaller than I expected, so don’t go in thinking it’s a huge castle-like experience. It’s more subtle and grounded in local history.

Tip: Combine your visit with a coastal walk, or grab fish and chips nearby at La Perouse — there are plenty of spots to sit and relax.

Overall, well worth the trip if you’re in Sydney and want something unique but not overly touristy. Just make sure to time your visit with a tour, and you’ll get the...

Bare Island Fort is truly one of Sydney’s hidden gems. Perched on an ancient sandstone and limestone outcrop, the fort feels like stepping back in time. The short walk across the charming wooden bridge alone is worth the trip—offering sweeping views over Botany Bay and the rugged coastline.

The history here is captivating. Built in the late 19th century to defend Sydney, the fort is full of tunnels, old gun placements, and stone barracks that still carry echoes of the past. Guided tours bring the stories to life with fascinating details about its role in Australia’s military history, as well as its later use as a retirement home for veterans.

Beyond its history, the setting is spectacular. The island is surrounded by some of the clearest waters in Sydney, making it a hotspot for divers and snorkelers. Even if you’re not diving, the coastal scenery and marine life are breathtaking. Photographers will love the vantage points from the bridge and the fort’s ramparts.

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a unique day out, Bare Island Fort offers something special. It’s a place where history, geology, and natural beauty come together. Highly recommended for anyone visiting La Perouse or exploring Sydney’s less-crowded coastal...

I've been visiting Bare Island Fort in La Perouse ever since I came to Sydney, and I must say it was an incredible experience! This historic site, located in the beautiful Botany Bay, is a true gem for anyone interested in history, architecture, or simply exploring new places.

The fort, which dates back to the late nineteenth century, is an almost completely intact example of coastal defense technology. The guided tour of the military fort and tunnels was fascinating, as we learned about the island's important role in protecting Sydney from potential enemy attacks.

The location itself is stunning, and the footbridge connecting the island to the mainland of La Perouse offers breathtaking views of the surrounding waters. The waters around the island are also popular among scuba divers, and we even learned about the Bare Island anglerfish, which is named after the island!

Overall, I highly recommend a visit to Bare Island Fort. It's a unique and educational experience that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for Australia's rich history and stunning...
