I remember it used to be called Fort Denison. When I looked up the address while photographing the Sydney Light Festival fireworks recently, I discovered that the place had been renamed "Pinchgut Island". I thought it was strange, so I looked it up and finally found the answer on Wikipedia: "Pinchgut Opera" takes its unusual name from Fort Denison, a former penal colony in Sydney Harbour nicknamed "Pinchgut" by the prisoners there. According to the company's website, the name was chosen "because we wanted a name that Sydneysiders would recognize and remember, while also reminding people of our tight budget and humble origins at the time." In other words, the island's name is related to a chamber opera company in Sydney, Australia.
