Disappointing Ticketing Experience at Hard Times Mine

I recently visited Hard Times Mine and had a great time on the tour - it was informative and fun! However, our experience was almost ruined by a frustrating ticketing issue.

Despite buying tickets on the official website few weeks in advance, we were told on arrival that they had oversold tickets to other families who bought tickets walk in. We were offered an alternative timeslot, but unfortunately, it didn't fit our tight schedule. After a lengthy disruption, they eventually honored our original timeslot.

The handling of this situation was disappointing. Overselling tickets shouldn't happen, and prioritizing later bookings over advance purchases isn't fair.

To anyone booking online, don't assume it's a done deal! Call them the day...

Get kitted out in disposable mining attire and a head lamp at the Hard Times Mine. On this 2½-hour tour you descend into a purpose-built mine complete with fuming, roaring, rattling machinery, 1.2km of tunnels and the crib room, often guided by former miners. Tour times are posted on an electronic screen showing that day's and the next day's tours. Advance bookings are always recommended.

What is it like to work down a mine and how do they get the minerals out of the ground ? All this and more is answered in this very informative mine tour. Put your overalls on, grab your gum boots we are going underground. A bit of history about what has been mined and how, up close with a 30+ ton electric truck capable of carrying 50 plus tons of ore & its off to the cage ( lift ). Ten at a time, so plenty of room for all in 2 quick trips, down the mine we go. With our hard hats on & head lights at the read, we venture forward, like Alice in her wonderland, a totally new Experience. Ian lead the way with his 50+ years in the mines. Such an interactive learning exercise, you won’t want to miss, even the kids had a bit of a blast. The rest in...

Whilst in Mt Isa we had a blooming awesome trip down a mine. Thoroughly enjoyed the underground experience, 3 hrs of a very informative and interactive experience. Our knowledgeable guide, Luke, an excellent and entertaining character who obviously loves his work, gave us an excellent overview of mining activities with an opportunity for some hands on experience also. Well recommended for anyone visiting Mt Isa, certainly gave me a new appreciation of what happens underground. Well done guys. Loved it and can’t promote it enough. Blooming awesome, get on down there.

What a wonderful time we had on this Hard Times Mine tour. While it’s not an active mine site, due to public liability, it is exactly the same as what you would see in the real mine. It is full of vintage and modern mining equipment, a lot that is still operational. We were even able to operate some of the drilling equipment under supervision of our guide, Frank, a miner with 17+ years as an underground miner. I would highly recommend this tour if you want to gain an experience of what mining is like in Mt Isa.
