Went to the WAG very excited to see their "collection is the sum of over 135 years of inspiration and innovation' holding 'more than 5000 works'. I was especially excited to see Von Guerard's rendition of Tower Hill, the wildlife reserve I'd been to visit earlier that day. I was bitterly disappointed. We saw one huge room with paintings scattered on the 4 walls and then were led into a video installation room. And that was it. That was the extent of this gallery's '5000 works'. We saw one -midly confusing- 'Covid-19' exhibition, curated to demonstrate (apparently) the lonliness of being stuck at home- where I wished I stayed. Funnily enough, after inquiring at the front desk as to why there was no art on display, we were told there simply wasn't the room for their '5000 works' they had hidden away in storage, only to see that next to the Covid exhibition, there was a room equally as big that housed... wait for it... a children's art group. Now obviously I'm all for children creating art, yay! But when I'm told that a gallery 'doesn't have the room' for art works that I had travelled three hours to see, well, it certainly leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Perhaps, WAG, in the future, when you don't have the room for very famous and very well-known artworks of tourist attractions nearby, that should be on the front page of your website, not hidden behind clever wording in a sub-menu that isn't called 'visiting WAG' or 'our collection'. Overall, wouldn't visit the WAG again. There are so many other regional victorian art galleries to visit that have actual room for actual paintings that people actually want to see. Lucky I didn't pay for my admission because I'd be...
Read moreOK once you get over the shock of seeing this beautiful old building totally desecrated by the so called "art" that has been inflicted on it by some supposed artist. The whole exterior has been spray painted in ghastly shades of pink and orange paint. The gallery owners must have had a severe brain malfunction to allow it. However, once you get inside, it is well set out, with some very nice displays. Welcoming staff, very friendly....
