I LOVE Wingham Brush Nature Reserve! Not only is it a popular spot for locals but we have many holiday makers and tourists stopping here and enjoying the view. Most weekdays you'll find plenty of ppl taking advantage of the Brush for a relaxing lunch or just taking some time out from a busy life. On weekends it's popular with boaters and you'll often see family/friend groups sharing a picnic, ppl fishing or local kids swimming in the river. A previous comment mentioned the smell. Because Wingham Brush is a nature reserve, and as well as other wildlife, a home to thousands of bats, some ppl will notice an unpleasant odour which is from the bats. I've been going there for years tho and I don't even notice it any more. There are boardwalks built throughout the reserve that let you take in a lot of the plants and nature there. Kids and adults alike love walking the boardwalk, seeing the bats and other wildlife in their native habitat and exploring! A truly amazing experience is in summer at dusk when all the bats come out. Some may be freaked by this experience but lots of ppl come to the brush at dusk just to watch the bats waking up and starting their 'day'. As a local I love Wingham Brush. For anyone wanting a relaxing stop off on a driving holiday it's...
Read moreSo this is a nature preserve in the middle of Wingham town. It was revegetated using tobacco bush (a weed) to establish an early canopy several decades ago. Looking at it now, you wouldn't know that it was originally an empty paddock with only three trees. The big attractions are: the strangler figs with their buttress roots; the bush turkeys, who currently maintain several turkey nesting mounds in the area; and if course the flying foxes (bats). This is one of the biggest colony sites for both red and grey flying foxes in NSW. But here are the warnings. The foxes are noisy, stinky and poop ... a lot. Fully enclosed and cheap shoes are a must. After you've walked the paths, there are bbqs and a swimming area suitable for families down by the river. And not much else. Bring your own food and entertainment or you risk a bored family by the end. Good for a lunch visit on the way...
Read moreNo matter whether you are a nature lover, fitness enthusiast, spending quality time with family, or relax some time wingham brush nature reserve is a good option. Meandering board walk through the dense diverse flora and endemic fauna is really exhilarating and reviving. Noise by myriads of flying foxes are quite scary unlike calm wild turkeys which are shy/timid. There are two board walks and one of the walk ends at manning river bank, from there we can see beautiful meadows and cows grazing the green pastures on the other side...
