Although this is not as close as the sunset viewing area, it is probably the best place to view the rock for free. You do not need to pay for a pass and it is just a "short" walk across the road from the main resort. And there was rarely anyone else there. This must be a well kept secret. It's still worth going to the paid Sunset viewing area, but if you are on a very tight budget, this is the best place. There is a little too much light pollution for good astrophotography, and you probably won't get "that" shot with the rock lit up and stars out without a little Photoshop or stacking. For sunrise views, leave your home 1 hour before the sun rises according to the weather app, and walk 15 minutes to Uluru Lookout.
You will get a closer look at Uluru and Kata Tjuta as compared to the main Imalung Lookout and the other lookouts in the resort area.
As always when you’re outside the resort, get the fly-net hat as it will serve you very well.
I personally got more glistening views of Kata Tjuta than Uluru because of the sunrise direction but that’s still gold...
