This is a wonderfully preserved city gate of Krems Austria (the other three city gates and the city wall have long since been demolished). The gate was restored in the late 1400's and refashioned in baroque style. Well worth seeing.

Približne od roku 1000 sa na území mesta usídlili kupci, na ktorých ochranu tu bol postavený strážny hrad a v roku 1014 založený farský kostol, ktorého patrónom je svätý Vít. V stredoveku bol Krems dôležitým remeselníckym a obchodným centrom, predovšetkým obchodu so soľou. Zásadný význam pre rozvoj mesta malo obdobie vlády českého kráľa Přemyslava Otakara II., kedy boli v štýle ranej gotiky dobudované kostoly dominikánov a v Steine minoritov, ktorý bol prvým kláštorom tohto rádu, založeným severne od Álp. Honosné domy si tu následne začali stavať mestskí či dvorskí úradníci.

The exterior gate into the city center. While there is also a lovely clock tower above, I thought this view would provide a unique perspective. Nice welcoming sight as you enter town.

Description

Steiner Tor is a preserved gate, originally built in the late 15th century but refashioned in the Baroque style in the city of Krems an der Donau, in the Wachau valley of Austria. It is considered the symbol of the city. Until the last third of the 19th century, the city of Krems was surrounded by a wall.
