It was my best experience during my 2-day stay in Vienna, and that’s saying a lot, with all the amazing attractions here. The Beethoven Museum was located outside the city centre and given that I had only 2 days in this city, I almost gave it a miss. But I am glad I travelled some 40-minutes to the location. That part of town at Probusgasse still had some well-conserved houses and even an old church. You can absolutely imagine Beethoven mingling in the community here in the summer of 1802.
In the modern-day layout, the museum is divided into 6 galleries. It is not important if the artifacts were replica or originals, but we get to see Beethoven’s handwritten manuscript and his handwriting in his letters. There’s a replica of a 5-pedal piano used in those times that have been modified to help Beethoven’s struggle with his hearing. To me, what was absolutely poignant was the despair documented in his unsent letters to his brothers over his progressive illness. Although I heard the translated version, it was enough to bring a lump to my throat.
I went there in June 2024 when there was an open house, so there was no entry charge and the museum was open from 10am to 5pm. Do note that normally, they are closed between 1-2 pm. No doubt I am seeing this through the lens of a student of classical music but I think anyone who admires greatness and fortitude in the face of adversity will appreciate the story...
Read moreWhile the Beethoven museum is not at the the most convenient location, I would definitely recommend tourists to make a trip here. We bought the tickets right before the visit.
The museum comprise of 6 rooms which goes is numbered (1-6) that goes through the life and death of Beethoven. There were explanations in English for each artefact. Although the artefacts may not be original, it gave us a good glimpse into this musical genius’s life and insight of who he was as a person. From knowing almost nothing about him, I would say after the visit, I know a fair bit about him now.
As the place is small, it would be good to avoid crowded timings (not sure when) to have the best experience. We went on a Sat afternoon and there were only 3-4 small groups of people there. I would recommend 1-2 hour for a...
Read moreReally quite neat museum of Beethovens life and death. Learnt quite a bit. Good exhibits. Many interactive and creative exhibits playing his music. Exhibits are translated in English and German. Great for Beethoven fans! Divided into 6 sections of his life. Need to be careful and time your visit right as we didn’t get to finish a little part of the museum due to the museum closing between 1-2 pm….; has a small gift shop at the ticketing counter.
You can purchase for 20.00 a ticket for 1 year for admission into Haydn, Schubert, Beethoven houses - however it does not include Mozart’s house; seems like the other houses are part of the Vienna museums affiliation. Alternatively, you can also purchase for just the single Beethoven house for 16.00. Free entrance first Sunday...
