Great museum and very informative. It’s a shame that this historical building was basically stripped down and modernized on the interior. I suggest adding replicas of things that existed there before, especially on the first floor where it goes through the history of immigration. Seems like a filler room like they didn’t know what to do with the space. Also it was kind of sad seeing the pictures of the hallway leading to the medical examination room, and comparing to how it is now, blocked up with walls for the exhibit. It would be better to try and be historically accurate to the layout of the building, instead of closing rooms off. Also would have been cool if instead of drawing lines on the ground, they had rebuilt the shower and changing room areas for people to see, and maybe add cool information inside the stalls. Also, at the end of the exhibit, it would be cool to have an interactive experience where you can look up a family member’s name that you know immigrated to North America, and see if their name shows up on any former passenger lists. I assume these names are on file somewhere? Washington DC does something similar where you can look up relatives that fought in WW2. Really added to...
Read moreThis is a great museum which has enough detail to make it intelligently interesting, but not so much that you are exhausted by it. I am Irish and so the emigration story is a familiar one, but my Belgian companion was very moved by the stories of the people who crossed Europe to leave Antwerp for the US on the Red Star Line. Some were fleeing poverty and discrimination, other were escaping the Holocaust. The stories of the steerage passengers were fascinating and the voyages of the rich people in first class were similar to every rich gathering worldwide: opulent, decadent and boring. The café/bar was nice to relax and talk about the experience afterwards with a good selection of beers. The presence of a cloakroom facility was welcome but it was unfortunate that the toilets had neither toilet paper nor soap. It seemed an incongruous flaw at such a well-run establishment. The shop stocks a good range of souvenirs, including very affordable ones. I liked it so much, I would go back and highly recommend...
Read moreAbsolutely fantastic!
I have to say this was my favorite museum in all of Belgium. It tells moving and exciting story’s of all the people who decided to immigrate to the US during the late 20th and early 21st century. The museum is well structured and offers a guide book with all the texts and background information in your language. You Even get to keep it afterwards and it is worth keeping since it is literally a well written and interesting book.
There are different rooms that tell different parts of the immigration progress, while you follow the steps that people hat to take when deciding to travel to the new world. Take your time and read everything or go through the exhibition quickly- your choice. The guide book gives you an overlook about the different parts of the museum and how much is still a head of you.
At the end you get to climb an...
