Nestled high above the city, the Citadel presents a magnificent panorama of Namur and its surroundings. The expansive view from the top is the real showstopper - from the sprawling cityscape to the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers, the vista is an absolute treat for the eyes. It's one of those rare places where the journey and the destination are equally rewarding.

Read moreI really enjoyed my visit to the citadel. Although the day I went was really hot so I opted for the cable car to go up, and then walk my way down when going out of it.
You can either walk, drive or take the cable car up to the citadel. Probably worth it if you want to see Namur during the ride.
Once you are at the citadel there many things to do and see, Iike an exhibition hall (quite unique architecture), an open space car park, a cafe, a train ride, a museum, and one of the highlights, the tunnels tour (only with guide tour - that should probably be booked in advance ) and a castle or chateu, where there’s also a cafe/restaurant and a nice flower garden.
Some areas look a bit poorly maintained, it seems that this is a trend in Namur, even for their most touristic attraction. What a shame. I hope this is only a post COVID thing, and the city will improve.
Highlights - DON’T MISS tunnels tour huge golden turtle statue the incredible view of Namur
Cable car is payed. Entrance to the citadel is free, but you pay the different things inside like the tour train, the museum, or the tunnel tour. The rest is free to explore.
Why I recommended reservation? Mainly because of the tunnels tour. The rest is Ok without...
Read moreA journey through time and history awaited me at the Citadel of Namur. Nestled at the meeting point of the Sambre and Meuse rivers, this majestic fortress is a testament to the strategic importance of Namur and the evolution of military architecture over the centuries. The Citadel has witnessed countless stories and transformations with its origins back to the Roman era.
The view from the top, at a staggering 190 m, is unparalleled - overlooking the flowing Meuse and the iconic Parliament of Wallonia. But it's not just the views that captivate; the history is rich and deep. It began in 937.
Walking through the Citadel, you are reminded of its ever-evolving role – from a strategic military post to its repurposing in the 1930s as a protected command post space. Today, it is a reminder of the past and a symbol of Wallonia's heritage – rightfully classified as a Wallonia Major Heritage site.
For anyone looking for a panoramic view of Namur, the Citadel is a must-visit. Experience a blend of nature's beauty and human ingenuity...
