Read moreWhen we arrived, the place wasn’t really open — but it wasn’t closed either. There was some kind of interview event going on. Luckily, we somehow managed to get inside and look around. Then we found out it was actually the last day the place would ever be open. It was about to close for good and maybe move somewhere else. I felt really lucky to be there that day.
I had heard some Yugoslav-era music before, but I had never thought about it seriously until visiting this museum. I absolutely loved the idea behind it — how music can unite people regardless of their ethnicity. I truly appreciated the guide who showed us around and played amazing recordings for us.
Everything in the museum is original, not replicas or reproductions, which made the experience even more special. After visiting, I left with a list full of great songs from that time.

Read moreYou probably blast the volume up when Bijelo Dugme or Zabranjeno Pušenje come on the radio. Those tunes are coded into us regardless the age, we love Yugo rock. However, I am not sure that everyone is aware that the Ex-Yu rock scene was indeed a cultural phenomenon, and Sarajevo played a pivotal role in shaping it.
The city was a melting pot of creativity and expression, and its rock scene was known for pushing boundaries, both musically and socially. All of that you can find out and see in the amazing Ex-Yu Rock Center - from the creative and provocative album covers, bold and original stage costumes, to the tunes and lyrics reflecting a spirit of rebellion and artistic freedom.
For anyone interested in music history or looking to understand the cultural impact of Ex-Yu rock, a trip to Sarajevo and its music scene is definitely worthwhile. The Center has amazing staff who will gladly walk you through and tell the most epic stories.
