If you love music, especially the timeless energy of Ex-Yu rock, the Ex-Yu Rock Centar in (Dom mladih, Skenderija) Sarajevo is a must-visit. Located right in the city center, this space is more than a museum. It is a vibrant tribute to one of the most important cultural movements in the region.

For just 5 KM, you can explore a beautifully curated experience filled with vintage records, iconic memorabilia, immersive exhibits, and powerful stories. Whether you are a lifelong fan of Azra, EKV, or Bijelo Dugme, or just starting to discover Ex-Yu rock, this place will speak to you.

What makes the Centar truly special is the mission behind it. Created by the Ex-Yu Rock Society, it is more than nostalgia. It is a living, inclusive space that celebrates music, creativity, and collaboration. From exhibitions to workshops and events, it continues to evolve and connect generations.

As someone from Sarajevo, I am proud to see such a meaningful and well-executed cultural initiative in the heart of the city. The care and passion behind every detail are clear.

Visit. Bring your friends. Support local culture. Celebrate the music that shaped...

When we arrived, the place wasn’t really open — but it wasn’t closed either. There was some kind of interview event going on. Luckily, we somehow managed to get inside and look around. Then we found out it was actually the last day the place would ever be open. It was about to close for good and maybe move somewhere else. I felt really lucky to be there that day.

I had heard some Yugoslav-era music before, but I had never thought about it seriously until visiting this museum. I absolutely loved the idea behind it — how music can unite people regardless of their ethnicity. I truly appreciated the guide who showed us around and played amazing recordings for us.

Everything in the museum is original, not replicas or reproductions, which made the experience even more special. After visiting, I left with a list full of great songs from that time.

I’m very thankful to the guide — I forgot to ask his name, my apologies — he shared fascinating insights about the era and even suggested a few bars where we could listen to...

You probably blast the volume up when Bijelo Dugme or Zabranjeno Pušenje come on the radio. Those tunes are coded into us regardless the age, we love Yugo rock. However, I am not sure that everyone is aware that the Ex-Yu rock scene was indeed a cultural phenomenon, and Sarajevo played a pivotal role in shaping it.

The city was a melting pot of creativity and expression, and its rock scene was known for pushing boundaries, both musically and socially. All of that you can find out and see in the amazing Ex-Yu Rock Center - from the creative and provocative album covers, bold and original stage costumes, to the tunes and lyrics reflecting a spirit of rebellion and artistic freedom.

For anyone interested in music history or looking to understand the cultural impact of Ex-Yu rock, a trip to Sarajevo and its music scene is definitely worthwhile. The Center has amazing staff who will gladly walk you through and tell the most epic stories.

Try not to miss live music events and super interesting...

A fantastic collection and journey through music at Ex-Yu Rock Centar! This is a newer museum space that has a thoughtfully curated and diverse collection spanning several decades of music in (ex-)Yugoslavia, with lots to see, read, learn, listen to and enjoy! Whether you are a local who wants an amazing experience down memory lane or a tourist who wants to dig in and learn more about pop culture and music in Bosnia and other areas of former Yugoslavia, or just a straight-up music lover – do set aside an hour or two to visit Ex-Yu Rock Centar. The entry fee is very fair and the friendly guides are highly knowledgeable, clearly passionate about music and all that it can encompass and celebrate!

As a newly arrived expat in Sarajevo, this was the first museum I wanted to visit. I can say it completely met my expectations. In the center, you embark on a journey through the history of Ex-Yu rock music. Thanks to the information provided by the guide at the beginning, there are no lingering questions in your mind. But the best part of the tour is that at any moment, you might encounter a famous former Ex-Yu rock star at the center. While we were there, we had the chance to meet Elvis J. Kurtović. Greetings to our guide and everyone involved with the center! 🤟 Punks Not Dead 🎸
