Mina Chico Rei — Attraction in Região Geográfica Imediata de Santa Bárbara - Ouro Preto

If you are interested in visiting this mine, or stumbled upon it during your trip to Ouro Preto, read about Galanga, the legendary figure from Minas Gerais. Brought as a slave to Ouro Preto, he lost his parents during the travel, being crowned king on the ship. Upon arriving in Brazil and being baptized and named Chico, he was enslaved on those mines, until eventually gaining his freedom.

If the story is true I do not know, but the mine is an interesting sightseeing spot. It is quite small, with two long tunnels that end in two rooms of sorts. In those rooms the guide will talk about the story of the mine and Chico Rei. One of the tunnels is quite easy to walk in, but the other is narrow and sometimes really short, so you will need to walk crouching.

It costs around R$25 to visit the mine, they offer you Cachaça while waiting to enter or when leaving the mine and I am not sure any guide talks English. The visit is short and is totally worth it.

Vou contar uma breve história, chegamos ao local eu e meu namorado, já sabíamos que o valor era 70,00 a mina é particular como os proprietários explicaram, eu tenho problemas com falta de ar em local fechado, mas eu queria muito ir, ficamos decidindo uma moça que é mãe de um dos meninos que estava atendendo conversou comigo pediram para eu ir até a entrada para sentir a mina e eu decidi ir. Depois que pagamos, vimos que os guias são dois meninos, um dos meninos deu uma touca e o capacete para a gente colocar na cabeça, eu nem sabia abrir o capacete acho que seria legal ele perguntar se quer ajuda ou eles mesmo colocarem, eu não consegui abrir e um outro veio e ajustou na minha cabeça. Um dos guias é um menino que aparenta ter 20 anos, não por ser novo, mas o menino não sabe nem explicar nada direito, ele fala embolado e rápido, como eu estava um pouco nervosa também acabei não prestando muito atenção, e após a visita meu namorado disse que nem ele entendeu, pois o guia era ruim mesmo. O guia aparenta não ter experiência alguma com isso, ele deixa a gente praticamente "jogados" dentro da mina, não tem cautela com as palavras, muito ruim mesmo. Vale a pena conhecer a mina sim, porém se você for, saiba que os guias não são experientes, são meninos que um deles diz que é parece do Chico Rei e conta umas histórias que nem sabemos que é verdade, fora que o preço é 70,00 achei bem caro para um passeio rápido de uns 20 minutos. Precisam melhorar a condução dos guias na mina, fiquei a fim de fazer várias perguntas, mas achei o guia que foi conosco muito ruim, e sarcástico. Uma outra coisa, eu tinha dito sobre o meu problema com falta de ar lá em cima, no meio do trajeto eu começou a me dar um pouco de falta de ar, eu parei informei só meu namorado e ao guia, o guia simplesmente disse, "ah já estamos acabando, de você quiser voltar, a gente volta", deveriam lidar melhor com isso e saber conduzir a situação. Pela minha nota 10, pelo guia nota 0. Ah, e eu tenho 1.83 m, quem for alto vai ter que ficar...

Total rip off. You pay 30 brl to see two small claustrophobic tunnels which give no idea of the history of the place. No explanation of the mine's context is offered, except that if you pay for a guided tour, THEN a richer experience awaits ... maybe ...

The owner of the mine across the road (Palacio Velho) instead invited us in and showed us around his mine - despite being officially closed (it was Christmas Day) - for a token amount and with an offer to come back the day after if we wanted.
