The Teatro Amazonas will be on most people's list of places to see in Manaus because there is nothing quite like it in the whole of the city and it is a symbol of a bygone age. It was built in 1896 when Manaus was being developed as the "Paris of the jungle" by the rich and opulent rubber barons. The interior has been renovated in more recent years and this has been done very sensitively such that it still feels as if it belongs to that era. The curtain with its "meeting of the waters" theme is original and the furnishings are both old and well restored. One of the main artists used to decorate the interior was the Brazilian Crispim do Amaral who travelled to Paris in 1888 just before he started his work in the opera house. O Teatro Amazonas é um dos mais importantes teatros do Brasil e o principal cartão-postal da cidade de Manaus. Localizado no Largo de São Sebastião, no Centro Histórico, foi inaugurado em 1896 para atender ao desejo da elite amazonense da época, que idealizava a cidade à altura dos grandes centros culturais.

Qual o valor para visitar o Teatro Amazonas? O ingresso custa R$ 20 para demais visitantes, em valor de inteira; idosos (com idade igual ou acima de 60 anos), estudantes, professores, militares, doadores de sangue e pessoas com deficiência e seus acompanhantes pagam meia-entrada.

O Teatro Amazonas tem uma importância significativa na construção da identidade histórica de Manaus, pois resgata a memória do município e possibilita a tentativa de vislumbre de parte do cotidiano daqueles que construíram aquele monumento.

O salão de espetáculos tem capacidade para 701 pessoas, distribuídas entre a plateia e três pavimentos de camarotes. Impossível não ficar hipnotizado com o teto côncavo, no qual estão quatro telas pintadas em Paris pela tradicional Casa Carpezot. As telas representam música, dança, tragédia e ópera.

O projeto de construção do Teatro Amazonas foi feito pelo deputado provincial Antônio José Fernandes Júnior e foi apresentado à Assembleia Provincial em 21 de maio de 1881. Venceu a licitação da obra o Gabinete Português de Engenharia de Lisboa, representado pelo comerciante Antônio de Oliveira Braga.

Construído em estilo renascentista, com projeto escolhido pelo Instituto Português de Engenharia e Arquitetura de Lisboa. A ideia era que a capital amazonense tivesse uma casa de ópera à altura do poderio da elite local. E assim foi feito.

Wow, this is an extraordinary beautiful opera theatre. From the outside it is already extremely beautiful but in the I side it is even more beautiful. I strongly recommend visiting it and getting a tour of around an hour. They have guides that speak English well. The price of the ticket is only 20 real. The last English tour was at 16:45 on the day we visited. The month January is the only month in the year that there are no shows so be aware if you are planning a trip to Manaus, in this month the artists have holiday.
