A Breathtaking Stage Where History Comes Alive
The Kourion Ancient Amphitheater is one of the most awe-inspiring archaeological sites in Cyprus. Perched dramatically on a cliff with sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea, this remarkably preserved Greco-Roman theater is a place where nature, history, and culture blend into something unforgettable. Originally built in the 2nd century BC and later expanded by the Romans, the amphitheater still stuns with its perfect acoustics, curved stone seating, and the magical energy that seems to rise from the stage itself. It’s easy to imagine ancient performances taking place under the open sky - especially when you’re standing there, surrounded by sea breeze and centuries of stories. Even better? The theater is still used for live concerts and performances today, bringing ancient tradition into the modern era in the most beautiful way possible. Whether you’re a history lover, architecture enthusiast, or simply in search of the most stunning views in Cyprus, Kourion is an absolute must-see. Five stars for timeless beauty and...
Read moreNote this is an entire archeological area not just the amphitheater. It's a popular location for tour buses so if you go during middle of the day, it can get very busy. We went around noon and there were at least 2 big tour buses and many other smaller ones. It's also all in the open w/o any shaded areas so can get hot. Additionally, since there's quite a few things you can see, you will need to decide it you want to walk past the amphitheater to see the rest of the items (walk is in the sun) or turn around. We decided not to walk the rest as we were mostly interested in the theater.
The views of the beach and water are amazing as well from the areas and you can definitely get some nice pictures.
Highly recommend making this stop but try to go in the morning when it's not as busy or late afternoon. you will appreciate being able to walk around without large crowds.
Also note that most of the path is wheelchair accessible and there are bathrooms in the visitor center. They also have vending machine if you need to buy water...
Read moreExtremely Recommended!! Well, I also have a love for culture and history. 😁 My friends, if you have the chance to visit ancient Kourion archeological ruins, do it. But if you come across an event like a Greek tragedy theatrical play or any kind of cultural event taking place at the ancient Kourion amphitheater then don't miss it!! It's a magical experience knowing that you sit and experience things the same way your ancestors did hundreds or even thousands years ago. One tip: if you are going to sit at the amphitheater, don't forget to take with you a cushion or pillow to sit on eat. Your ass will thank me. 😂 And btw if you visit this place and you have more time, I recommend you visit also the ruins of the temple of Apollo Hylates which is like 5 min drive from Kourion and ofc the Kourion beach for swimming. 😉 Extremely...
