I have been visiting Deer Lake for a leisure stroll every Saturday for a year now - rain, snow, ice, fog or shine. It has yet failed to bore me and I just love every visit. I've seen seasons ripen up and go; ducks, geese and sea gulls raise their young, "skate" on the ice, or just do some bird community talk on the small beach or in the shrubs and marshes. Never have I felt unsafe there, and the mix of lake views, walking on wooden or gravel trails in a forest full of light and birdsong is addictive. All trails are very picturesque in any season, and bird watching is definitely entertaining, with plenty of observation spots. All wooden elevated trails are netted for safety, to prevent slipping/skidding; and even in the dead of winter with trails covered in packed snow and ice, it is safe to walk (still, use common sense when choosing your runners or boots). There is a marsh area with birds nesting, a vibrant heron habitat in a group of tall maple trees at the Northern tip of the park, a model airplane field by the marshes, a stream/riparian protected area, a kayak rental place, a warm washroom year round!, and swings on the beach for the younger ones to join the birds in flight. It is really a great urban forest/lake park to suit any need to recreate and relax. Do not recommend it to back country hikers, because the urban vibe, though subtle, is still there with all these conveniences and the flat terrain. For the garden lovers, the exquisite landscaping next to the Shadbolt Centre of the Arts and Burnaby Art Gallery - Century Gardens - is a lovely place to enjoy year round. Coffee at the Centre is good too, especially if it rains too much to...

Deer Lake Park is one of our favorite places to shoot for family photography. It's a bit of a hidden gem, nestled in the heart of Burnaby just outside of Vancouver, and offers a diverse and captivating backdrop for photoshoots. It boasts a harmonious blend of natural beauty and cultural attractions, making it a photographer's paradise. The highlight is the actual lake, surrounded by towering trees and lush greenery, and offers a serene and peaceful feel with the undisturbed waters. Additionally, the park features winding trails that lead through dense forests and open meadows, offering a wide variety of opportunities for photos.

The park is also home to a vibrant arts and cultural scene, with attractions such as the Burnaby Art Gallery and Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. These venues not only add depth and character to the park but also offer unique architectural elements and artistic installations that can enhance our photoshoots, offering additional looks with an urban environment. It's versatility in both backdrops and ability to shoot in any season is why it often tops our list of choices to shoot in Vancouver.

The only disadvantage to this place is the high population of geese and their occasional "belongings" that they leave behind. The team there does a pretty good job keeping paths clear, but on occasion, it can be overwhelmed, making it a minefield to trek from one end of the park to the...
