Today Stella & I headed over to Unleashed to set up delivery and to pick up Stella's favourite food. On the way home, I saw a sign to the Glenmore Athletic Park so I thought, Let's go there and see what was up. Well, we didn't make it that far. We found the off leash park at River Park. There were lots of people and a vast variety of dogs all enjoying the beautiful weather. The off leash area was clearly designated. The park is 21 hectares and is open from 5am to 11pm. At the very south side entrance, .there is a porta potty! This alone bumps it up a star! This park is well maintained and respected by the numerous dog owners. Perhaps there are so many people, it is harder not to pick up after your dog. But, whatever the reason, there was very little dog poop anywhere. And there is a dog water fountain in the park. It is located in the Cat Margetts Memorial Park, within the larger park. These two bonuses also boost the star power but I can only give 5 stars. The park overlooked Sandy Beach and the Elbow River. The views are stunning. How nice that such beauty is right here in Calgary! Stella met so many very chill dogs. Their owners were pretty cool too. I had several nice chit chats while our dogs checked each other out. And so many people were patient with 6 month old Stella. Thanks to them she is learning how to greet people and dogs. Stella, very unlike herself, refused to have her picture taken at the park. I tried. Even if you don't have a dog, take a walk in this park. Maybe you will want a dog after...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreRiver Park is easily one of the best, if not the best off leash parks in Calgary! It is clean and even has a group of dedicated individuals who help to keep it that way known as Friends of River Park. Check them out on Facebook. The location is unparalleled as it is centrally located in the inner city with incredible views of the river below and downtown just beyond. In fact, when there are fireworks downtown ie. Stampede fireworks, you can watch them from this park quite easily. Another gem about this Park is not only is it easily walkable, but that it is a straight line so that you will pass many dogs along the way. Your dog will appreciate that. Socializing is as important for your dog as it is for you. Bikes have a separate path so no worries about having your dog get hit. If you wish to change it up a bit, there are a few paths down to the river so that you and/or your dog can take a dip on a hot Summer day. What an amazing city Calgary is to be able to provide this type of quality Park right in the inner city! Take a drive to 14A St and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBeen coming here for 10 years. Great location; lots of space; lots of brush/bushed, gravel paths and grass fields; paths to Sandy Beach and river access; people are friendly. Good mix of small and large dogs, young puppies and senior dogs. Adequate garbage bins, poop bag stations, benches/picnic tables, and a toilet available at south end. You might be able to find park toys laying around. There's also an info board, lost and found and doggy water fountain. Every Dec holiday season, the volunteer group and other users also hang ornaments in some of the trees.
No fenced in areas; south parking lot is busy at times, especially when people use parking lot for floating down the river in the summer time, there's a running event, or a pet commercial event. Some people don't pick up their dogs poop; Runners and cyclists use the park also, amd sometimes they get upset when dogs chase them for fun.
Highly recommended, but people need to work together to keep such a...
