Always an educational & thought provoking visit, the Armoury is actually a building inside a building - replete with arrow slits, balustrades and an "air moat" inside the fort between the outside and the armoury, this historic building also houses the Edmonton City Archives, the Edmonton Telephone Museum, the Edmonton Arts Council, travelling art exhibits as well as on site information about the role of the building and Canadian military during active usage.
Accessibility is great in the main areas, with a long, wide gentle ramp leading into the building - but falls off in side hallways for some of the offices and bathrooms due to stairs or huge heavy doors or narrow corridors. Much of the building is navigable with a wide rollator, and a powered chair should be able to access a portion of the building. Unfortunately, due to the age & historic nature, retrofits to increase ease of use are minor and leaves many unable to explore this piece of Canadian history.
Expect groups on tours, particularly schoolchildren. Transit is nearby but still a distance despite the LRT tracks being so close, this is a drive or walk a ways sort of...
Read moreWe held our wedding ceremony at the Prince of Wales Armouries and it went amazingly well. Leading up to the event, there was sometimes a bit of trouble communicating with the venue but that seemed understandable for a government building. We were eventually able to get all the details sorted out and they were very accommodating of all our requests. The day before the wedding, our coordinator sent us photos of the setup, and was able to make the changes we requested. Then day-of the onsite coordinator was fantastic and there was ample signage everywhere pointing our guests where to go, which I really appreciated it as the building can be somewhat confusing to navigate if you've never been there before. I didn't hear of any of our guests getting lost though! The venue also accommodated our officiants last minute request to put a podium in the room. The building was of course beautiful and the staff let us take the majority of our pictures inside after the ceremony, as the weather was not great. I would definitely recommend the Prince of Wales Armourie's for anyone looking for a unique, indoor...
Read moreThis landmark holds loads of memories for me, good and bad, but definitely mostly good, from rappelling off the side of the building to plinking off .22 rounds in the downstairs range to leading my platoon out for our annual inspection. I've been attending Remembrance Day ceremonies here for many years and although the inside of the building has changed throughout the years, the walls still hold many wonderful memories that speak to me, from walking up the familiar sidewalk and pushing through the heavy wooden doors, all of a sudden I'm twelve years old again getting fit for my first Army Cadet uniform that lead down the military path...beautiful building to match the...
