Nice quick ferry ride over to the island, prepare to walk on the island but it's not overly taxing, the hilliness is apparent from shore so no surprises. Not all of the installation was open, but there was a 10-15 minute historical tour of some of the underground stuff, including stairs. Over time perhaps most of it will be available. The staff was friendly. There is a public bathroom there but no canteen for drinks or snacks when I was there, but you could enjoy it all in an hour or two so just bring your own. Note you schedule your ferry over but you can hop on any ferry back. Covid protocols were in place for boarding and on the ferry. The presence of snakes is not a rumour, but they avoid the areas frequented by people so visitors who are afraid of them won't have problems. It's a nice little afternoon thing to do by itself, for history buffs it's probably better done in combination with...

This was an amazing experience as someone who was Born in The City of Halifax, and was always looking at the island from afar.

To be able to finally step foot on the island was a great feeling. Having said that, this is a once in a lifetime type of experience.

Because once you have done it, you really have no reason to step foot on it ever again. It is unfortunately much too small to be of any realtime significance in this day and age, speaking of age, there is a lot of history to learn about the Island and Fort Charlotte. It is very interesting to learn about what was and what is no longer there.

Everyone should take the opportunity to visit the Island ONCE.

PS, if you can, take up the opportunity to buy into the picnic option with Ambassatours. You won't find a better place for Picnic in...

Interesting visit, but it felt as though the National Historic Site exists to celebrate the positive aspects of our history but glosses over the dark years completely.

The ferry to the island is quick and convenient, and the staff both on the ferry and the island were nothing short of spectacular.

Lots of information about the importance the island played in Canada’s early national defence. Disappointed however, that there was little to no mention of the role George’s Island played during the atrocities committed against the Acadian people during the great deportation. It would be nice if Parks Canada would acknowledge what happened in the 1700s as opposed to just the...

As someone who likes history, I enjoyed visiting this site. Having a guided tour of the fort's tunnels, learning how the Acadians were imprisoned here as part of the 18th century explusions, hearing how this island has a special place for the Mi'kmaq, and understanding the long military presence on the island made this trip worth it. That said, Halifax has so many great places to see, I am not sure if this island is a "must see." If you are in Halifax for a long visit, then I would recommend coming here. However, if you are short on time, you may want to consider skipping George Island and going to the Citadel or another place instead.

The island isn't big and the visit route is well organized with clear signs. You can learn the history related to the fortress and at Fort Charlotte, there's free tunnel tour showing inside of the fort and some interesting stories. The views of Halifax from the island is stunning and there are multiple picnic tables there where you can enjoy the fort or the views of Halifax skyline. The entrance the fort is free this summer but the only ferry to get to the island is conducted by Ambassadors Grey Line, otherwise you can get to the island by private boat or kayaking.
