Read moreMy son was invited to attend Genstem 2024, a day at Macmaster designed for high school students interested in STEM programs. I attended with him and I am so glad I did! I paid money to listen to multiple land acknowledgments, and we were privileged to receive resume advise from a person who is mandated to help all students that don't look like my son. We patiently waited 6 hours to learn about the amazing Science and Engineering courses that Macmaster has to offer. Unfortunately, while some of the material was interesting and informative, there was no time spent hearing about the Automotive Engineering, Nuclear Sciences or any other courses I was hoping my son could learn about. I had spent the previous couple weeks telling him how amazing science and engineering is after Highschool. I guess modern universities have other priorities besides motivating the future scientists and engineers of the world. After many days of reflection, I am still thoroughly disappointed by this experience. Although, I am glad I was there to give my son support in an environment that is designed to be exclusionary to him and teach him that he must purservere in order to succeed in these institutions where everyone is NOT treated equal. Hopefully, there will be other events that leave political grooming and favoritism at the door, and focus on education. That way, my wonderful, innocent son can continue to develop into the amazing adult human being he is...
Read moreThe campus has changed drastically in the past 10 years. Many big buildings have gone up in that time such as PGCLL (Peter George Centre for Living and Learning).
The new lecture hall(s) have bigger seats, larger projector screens, and more desk space to take notes. They also have outlets for each seat that can be used to charge your devices conveniently.
There is a brand-new residence building currently under construction, that will accommodate hundreds of more students so that you will almost certainly be guaranteed to receive a room if you choose to live on campus for your first year.
There are also 3 large libraries, along with a few smaller ones scattered across campus. Along with nice trails you can walk to be around the nature and relax when it’s needed.
The older buildings do show their age, it will be obvious to newcomers which buildings were built in the 2000’s, because the ones built before then have lecture halls seats that look like they are built for middle school children.
Overall, it’s a fairly nice campus with everything you would expect to have at a top-rated canadian university. The University is constantly spending money to grow, adapt, and upgrade the buildings, walkways, Gyms, and more for students’ convenience. If you don’t mind the small-towny vibe that you get when living in or around the university (in Westdale, Cootes, or Ainslie Woods neighbourhoods) then you will be happy you...
