just 10 miles outside the city, along the St. Lawrence River, Montmorency Falls Park attracts nature lovers and sightseers alike with its 272-foot waterfall. At 83m high, a full 30m taller than Niagara Falls, the Montmorency Falls are as spectacular a sight in the summer as in the winter.
This is one destination you will not want to miss, as it is where the St. Lawrence River stretches out not far from the base of the cliffs.
It is a splendid introduction to the scenery of Quebec.” Though the falls were well-known to the indigenous people who lived there, Samuel de Champlain, a French colonist and the founder of Quebec City, formally named them after the Duke of Montmorency, his patron.
Montmorency Falls has a little something for everyone—walking tours, thrill-seeking activities, cable cars, and a healthy dose of local history
Fact: Montmorency Falls is one-and-a-half times taller than Niagara Falls.
At the top is the Manoir Montmorency which was originally the country house of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, also Queen Victoria’s father. The old house built in 1780 was destroyed by a tragic fire accident in 1993. The one you see today is a reconstruction that maintains the architecture of the original building and has a few features of its own.
There are multiple ways to explore Montmorency Falls, Quebec City: take the cable car to the top and walk back down, take the cable car up and down, walk the 480+ stairs up to the cliffside to the top of the waterfalls, or park at the top and walk around a little before returning to your car.
1- Cable car 2- stairs - (app 500 steps) But they warn that the stairs can be tough to navigate during the winter and that sometimes the stairs are closed due to ice.
There are a variety of activities at the park, including hiking trails, playgrounds, bike paths, and a double zip line (well I don't have the courage to cross on fall through zipline- it's 1000 feet)
Parking: Ample parking sports which can be filled quickly on a summer day, especially on weekends Restrooms, gift shops, cafes facing falls- it's all there.
What I did not like - I was fine with an entry fee, but the cable car cost an extra $16/PP [unlimited ride though], so the whole experience cost me CAD 65 for 2 people. it's not that...
Read moreIf you are planning a trip near Québec City or even coming from Montreal, this waterfall is an absolute must-visit. It offers a spectacular natural escape that feels both peaceful and adventurous at the same time. Our journey began bright and early with a visit to the falls, and starting the day here truly set the tone for an amazing trip. Arriving in the morning is ideal because it allows you to beat the crowds, experience the serene atmosphere, and capture beautiful photos before the area gets busy. The gates to the falls open at 9 a.m., so I suggest aiming to arrive around that time for the best experience.
There are multiple ways to make your way up to the top of the waterfall, each offering a different perspective. The most convenient option is the ropeway, which provides stunning aerial views as you ascend over the surrounding landscape. However, it does come with a higher cost, since there is both an entry fee and an additional charge for the ropeway. For a more budget-friendly and adventurous approach, I recommend taking the hiking trails or the long set of stairs that lead to the summit. The hike is not overly strenuous, and as you make your way up, you’ll encounter several scenic viewpoints that allow you to enjoy the waterfall from various angles.
From the top, the view is breathtaking, with the cascading water roaring below and the surrounding nature stretching out into the distance. Whether you are staying in Québec City or making the three-hour drive from Montreal, this destination is absolutely worth the trip. Visiting this waterfall is a memorable experience that perfectly combines natural beauty, light adventure, and plenty of opportunities for photography. I highly recommend adding it to your travel plans...
