I have only ordered online, but my experience was mixed.
Overall the experience was good. The store called to confirm my address, fish and shrimp were well packaged in case of delays and were all healthy and lively and clearly well taken care of before shipping. I can tell that Kowloon clearly is a good place which is why i find myself feeling incredibly disappointed.
The amano shrimp i ordered were exactly as expected, vibrant colours as you'd expect and honestly felt like a steal for the price they were being sold for at Kowloon.
The Avatar blue angelfish however was $100 and on the website they picture juvenilles with full colour all along the body, very few stripes or dots and full colour even on the finnage. While i don't expect any fish store to have what they picture exactly, for $100 i expect it to be at least somewhat close. Instead I was sent a standard low grade avatar angelfish, the same ones you can get for $20 to $30 that have colour only on their upper half, are super stripey on their fins and body, and his long trailing fins were very deformed and one was sticking out completely at an angle. I am still happy with my purchase over all but i wish the listings were a little more honest.
EDIT: Now that I have seen the angelfish grow a bit, I'm pretty sure I was just sent the wrong type of angelfish all together. I believe I was sent an Avatar ZEBRA angelfish and not the Avatar BLUE angelfish I ordered since they are the same price and names are fairly similar. So while the angelfish does look exactly as described if that's the case I've taken off another star for messing up the order entirely.
EDIT 2: I have attached pictures of the Angelfish, I'm sorry my camera is not the best and the quarantine tank is not the prettiest. I have mentioned that he is a picture perfect Avatar zebra angelfish. If you look them up on google you will see that he is a very high quality one so if that's what someone is looking for I would definitely recommend buying them here.
I am well aware that all the blue colour on Angelfish comes in with age, but the pictures on Kowloon website depict very high quality Avatar Blue Angelfish with white base fins which you can tell from the pale blue stripes on the dorsal fin (picture included) they don't have black through the eye or black stripes or dots on the body and no black base base fins or lace striping on the tail and fins which lead to believe that I've just simply been sent the wrong Angelfish.
EDIT 3: I've waited awhile now and my beautiful Angel has become a solid blue on top but has shown no signs of having any colour on the bottom half whatsoever. He is however the most beautifully coloured avatar angel I have seen. The genetics in this line are cleary strong so I'm still very happy with him, I just hope that Kowloon considers that the pictures from the breeder might be inaccurate to the product they were actually sent.
Changed my review as Kowloon offered to fix the dissatisfaction though I ended up not following through on it since I'm still happy with my over...
Read moreI placed what I would consider a large order for an at home enthusiast with this business. I would be having fish shipped to me a few hours away, so we called in advance to ensure we placed our order correctly to have it delivered on the desired day.
The first time they impressed me was for that callâŠwe rang the shop and there was no answer, and they promptly called us back even though we didnât leave a message. They walked us through placing our order, and were very pleasant to deal with.
Then, through no fault of theirs, everything that could have gone wrong with the shipment did. I canât know for certain what the shipper did after receiving the package, but they damaged it and then took and an entire week to deliver it to us. During that time the seller had been following up with them and sending me updates. We had agreed to have the shipment returned back to them after a number of days because hopes were low about any surviving fishâŠthey handled all of that.
Despite their efforts the package was indeed delivered to me EIGHT DAYS after it was shipped. Seller and I did not have high hopes for the state of the fish at that point. I rushed home from work thinking I would be doing a photo shoot of dead fish for a shipping claim.
I opened the box and to my dismay my daughter noticed some movement. We pulled out bag after bag of LIVING fish!! They had no food, light, air, or clean water for eight days and all of the fish in undamaged bags were alive. I acclimated them over the next two hours and waited to see who didnât make it. We lost only one fish after that.
Despite the long transit delay caused by the shipping company, the fish actually seemed to be doing quite well. Now, a few days later, all our new fishies are colouring up quite nicely and have lots of personality. No sign of injury or disease. I would also note that these fish seem very comfortableâŠsometimes you buy fish and every little thing spooks them. Even the shyer fish we ordered come to the glass and are out on display often.
I think all of this speaks to the health of these fish honestly. In order to survive this ordeal they must have been very healthy and well cared for prior to shipping. The store also took extra precautions with their shipment to ensure they had the best possible trip they could have. This is not the experience Iâve had with other fish stores. I will definitely be ordering from them again, and hopefully making the trip to visit the store myself.
I absolutely recommend Kowloon Aquarium to any hobbyists out there who are looking for healthy fish pets, and a fish store that offers truly excellent...
Read moreBest place for aquarium and terrarium hobbyistsïŒ The two gentlemen, Simon and Jeff are very friendly and helpful. They speak fluent English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
I got interested in non-filter, non-CO2 aquariums about 2 months ago (been watching YouTube videos). And bought my first 7 Gal tank there. (Iâve posted Wk1-4 pictures of my tank and everything was bought there, including the tank itself, substrates, gravel, aquatic plants, driftwood, fish food, etc.) Being a total beginner, I didnât know much about setting up a new tank. Simon and Jeff gave me good advice and suggestions on how to do it, like cycling the tank, adding bacteria to accelerate the process, and they helped me test the water for ammonia and nitrites. Well, theyâre just like friends. They wonât recommend anything thatâs not suitable for the aquarium just for sales (I practically begged Simon for selling me 3 Danios on Wk 3.5, when there was still a tiny trace of ammonia in the sample). Instead, they genuinely hope that you can get the best results and that the plants/livestock you pick up are going to live happily. Itâs been 4 weeks now, and my aquarium seems to be fine. The fish, shrimps, and snails are living well altogether. Iâve not yet lost any of it. They also offer custom designs for aquariums and terrariums I think. Might need to make an appointment or inquiry by calling them first.
All in all, this is my favorite pet shop now. And I would recommend any hobbyist to have a...
