Two large carved Cedar logs and multiple boulders mark the gateway to the Kitslano neighborhood through the idea of local Kits resident Jim Kostynuik and designed by carver Pete Ryan. Squamish Chief August Jack Khatsohlano was born 1867 in Xwayxway, what is now known as Stanley Park. He was a remarkable man of his time. A father of five, a master canoe carver, guide, trapper and known for driving log booms down the Squamish River. August was one of the last Squamish medicine men and ancient dancers. August Jack preserved some precious memories of the times through recordings during the "Conversations with Khatsohlano 1932-1954 as part of talks with J.S Mathews, the cities first archivist.
