First of all, I love fish and chips and I really think âchipsâ need to be as good as the âfishâ itself for the dish to be good.
When I post a review, as some may already know, I visit at least twice or more. However, unfortunately, I donât think that will be the case for this location. And here is why.
I went for a lunch on a beautiful sunny summer weekend right when they opened at noon. There were 6 two person tables which were already full along with few people waiting. That is completely fine but the issue was the fact that there was no A/C which made the place REALLY warm. I never sweated so much having a meal as I did on this day.
As for the food, fish was fried to perfection with light batter and crispy to the last bite. Fries could have been better, imho. Oh, by the way, for most of us, when ordering fish and chips, it is a general understanding that it comes with a tartar sauce and bit of a coleslaw. Well, be aware that they wonât come with your fish and chips-you will have to order them separately.
Keep in mind that fish and chips are about $3-$4 cheaper than other fish and chips places; however, when you order the sauce and slaw, depending on the size of them, it will be same price or slightly more.
I also tried onion rings but nothing special and found batter to be a bit much unlike the fish.
Service, I am sure, is good in general but not when I went. Perhaps itâs because I went right when they opened with all tables filled but after the food was served, nobody came to check on things once. I am not saying the service was bad but I think it can be better even when they are busy.
Overall, good enough food, wish they had AC so food can be enjoyed in a more comfortable atmosphere during warmer days and service can be...
Read moreI recently had the absolute pleasure of dining at Cockney Kings Fish & Chips in the heart of Kitsilano, and I am compelled to share my exceptional experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by an incredibly friendly and attentive staff, setting the stage for a memorable meal.
The cleanliness of the restaurant was immediately noticeable, reflecting their commitment to providing a comfortable and hygienic dining environment. This attention to detail extended to every aspect of my visit.
Now, onto the main event â the fish and chips. As someone who holds the gold standard of England and Ireland close to heart, I can confidently say that Cockney Kings not only meets but exceeds these expectations. The quality of the fish was top-notch, with a perfect, crispy batter that was neither too thick nor too oily, enveloping the freshest, flakiest fish Iâve had in a long time. The chips were a delightful companion â golden, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside, just as they should be.
What truly amazed me was how Cockney Kings has successfully managed to bring the authentic taste and quality of traditional English and Irish fish and chips across the ocean, right to our doorstep in Kitsilano. Itâs refreshing and frankly, quite impressive, to find such an authentic culinary experience so far from its original shores.
I wholeheartedly give Cockney Kings Fish & Chips my highest recommendation. Whether youâre a longtime fan of this classic dish or trying it for the first time, youâre in for a treat that transcends continents. A phenomenal experience that I canât...
Read moreThis place is one of the very few places in the lower mainland that will exceed your expectations. Expectations that have become very low by the mediocrity of all the places that sell fish and chips here. See, if you like fish and chips in Vancouver, you'll mostly be navigating your way among dozens of places that either sell you dry rubbery fish you can't even taste, or fish covered with a very thick layer of batter that when you bite into it, the fish is barely even visible in there, and you realize the three pieces you got barely have a 100 grams of fish.
Not Cockney Kings!
First of all, the batter is the right thickness, covers all the fish evenly, crispy for the most part, no hollow-batter-only voids in the fish, it holds together well, and doesn't fall apart, yet is only a couple of millimetres thick. The fish itself, is flavourful, well seasoned, fresh and flaky, and thick cut, tried the snapper, cod, and haddock, all were well cooked, and definitely not dry. Even when I order delivery and they sometimes have a buy one get one free, even then, the fish is great quality and not dry or overcooked, which is what you'd normally expect from every other place that will offer you a bogo on fish and chips. My favorite thing about this place tho, is how flexible the menu is. You can order any fish by the piece, so if you're on a low carb diet you can order just the fish, or you can make you own fish and chips dished with any quantity or type of fish you want. Fries are homemade and good too. Not a big fan of their Bill Murray poutine but everything else is highly...
