Ogden Point Sundial is a unique and often-overlooked landmark located along the picturesque waterfront in Victoria, British Columbia. Positioned near the Ogden Point Breakwater, this sundial offers visitors a functional yet artistic way to tell time while enjoying sweeping views of the Juan de Fuca Strait.
The sundial itself is a simple yet elegant design, featuring a metal gnomon (the part that casts a shadow) on a circular stone base, with hour markers arranged around it. While it may not be the most elaborate timepiece, its setting makes it a worthwhile stop. The location is perfect for a leisurely stroll, with the ocean breeze and distant views of the Olympic Mountains adding to the experience.
One of the highlights of visiting the Ogden Point Sundial is the surrounding scenery. Whether youâre out for a morning walk, watching cruise ships dock nearby, or enjoying a sunset, this spot provides a peaceful escape from the city. Itâs also a great place for photos, especially when the golden light of the late afternoon enhances the coastal beauty.
However, some visitors may find the sundial itself a bit underwhelming, as it lacks interpretive signage or historical information. Itâs more of a subtle addition to the area rather than a major attraction. Still, for those who appreciate simple yet thoughtful landmarks, itâs a charming feature that blends well with the natural...
Read moreSunny weather, a bit of a breeze. But not enough to have the waves crashing onto the sidewalk over the new seawall which was a good thing because I was taking pictures. The walk from the cafe out to the beacon and back is about 2,000 steps. Had hot chocolate at the Breakwater Cafe, the old Dive Cafe but much more upmarket with table service, patio dining and a wine tasting room where the old dive shop used to be. Also had a humongous slice of carrot cake. Not quite as good as mother's but comes with the cream cheese icing and added whipped cream on the sides. Nice touch. The new paved sidewalks along Dallas Rd were a pleasant walk and the lounge chairs bolted down along the way so u could sit and look out to the ocean are a nice treat. People were spreading out food for picnics. I...
Read moreIt is wonderful to have an interactive, functional, sundial in Victoria! This sundial is embedded into the walkway, on the south side of Dallas Road, at Ogden Point.
In order to determine what the time is, a person must stand in the centre of the sundial. Embedded beside the sundial, are instructions, to guide those who have never used a sundial. The interactive aspect of the sundial, makes it even more enjoyable than the more common sundials, that are situated atop pedestals.
The walk along Dallas Road (where the sundial is located), is one which I highly recommend, to both tourists and locals, regardless of the season or...
