The Great Wall Mutianyu. We were fortunate to visit the wall on a crisp but beautifully sunny day. This section of the wall is very well maintained and stands in all its glory in an amazing section of the mountains covered in trees which spread as far as the eye can see. A clear day is very much needed in order to see the spectacular views and wall in all its glory. Parts of the wall are very steep and very challenging to walk and in places...climb. There is a cafe stop to take a well earned break and refreshments if needed. For a small charge you can ride a chair lift up to the wall saving your energy for the wall walk. And a toboggan to speed you back down . This was incredibly good fun and the photographs taken to capture your smiling face on accent and decent are very good value at 5 dollars/30 yuen. A truely amazing experience.

I've seen the Badaling side of the wall and actually like the Mutianyu side better. They have chair lift (takes you to a spot between watch towers 5&6) and cable car (takes you further up near watch tower 10/11) options to go up and a luge/slide to come down. It's great fun and makes for good photo opportunities. Be sure to get here early - we got here by 9 and it was almost empty. Tourist groups and crowds start from around 10:30. It's a 75 min ride from the city and we took a private tour since we were pressed for time. You can also take bus 961 from the city to a spot close to Mutianyu, and then take one of the many shared vans.

As a group of two families, we really enjoyed staying here, having rooms close to each other, the rooms are large, beds are adequate, and the family is very accommodating. They offer food and we found it to be very good! Their english language skills are quite good as well. The Great Wall is within walking distance of this Farmhouse, and we found the price to be reasonable. One of the neighbors blasted talk radio at 7am every morning (two mornings in a row), so bring earplugs or be prepared to wake up early.

This was a beautiful section of the great Wall and not hard to hike up to at all. If you go right as it opens you will be able to get views with no one in sight. I would highly recommend coming here if you have a stopover in Beijing. Make sure you get a reputable guide though because ours was a very bad driver who texted the whole time and said insulting remarks.

Very impressive, but full of tourists. I would definitely go early in the morning, at this time it was nice to wake along the wall. Cable car costs 120 CYN per person. You can also walk up to the first tower but that is taking approximately 30-45 minutes, depends on you. It's about 2500 steps :-)
