We visited the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Guangzhou while exploring the city, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Also known as the Stone House (石室圣心大教堂), this grand Gothic cathedral stood out immediately with its striking granite facade and twin spires rising high above the surrounding streets.
The architecture is absolutely stunning and very unexpected in the middle of a bustling Chinese city. Entirely built from granite, the cathedral has a very European feel, reminiscent of churches you’d find in France. Inside, the stained-glass windows were beautiful, casting colorful reflections across the interior. The atmosphere was peaceful and quiet when we visited, giving us time to really take in the details.
The cathedral is located just off the busy Beijing Road shopping area, but the entrance is tucked away a little, making it feel like a hidden gem. There’s no entrance fee, and visitors are welcome to walk in freely, though Mass times should be respected.
