Hong Cheng Hotel — Hotel in Guangzhou City

Location quite central to most shopping districts (also a ten minute walk to yide subway station). There is also an excellent Cantonese restaurant about fifteen minutes walk away - 海鲜街菜馆 - it’s so good and cheap that we went there for four dinners!! If you don’t wish to walk, next to it is a restaurant （兄弟记) - it’s slightly higher end in ambience and price but quality is just as good. Nearby are also numerous dried goods - too many to choose! Many convenience stores in vicinity.||This is a three star hotel, so you have to be realistic about size of room, amenities etc. But for the cheap price, the air con is comfortable, basic toiletries are present (I didn’t use their toothbrush as its bristles are too hard), a unmovable safe is provided, complimentary 2 small bottles of mineral water daily. What I particularly liked are the FOUR USB charging ports next to the bed. What I particularly disliked are the HARD bed and the SOFT pillows! Booked this hotel in advance via Expedia as didn't want to spend too much time looking for accomodation while in Guangzhou for just a day. The hotel was the cheapest option available in the river front/ Shamian island area. I wish we hadn't booked it as there's plenty of cheap accommodation available in that area and I'm sure we could have had this room or any other room way cheaper if we hadn't pre-booked. We now paid CNY483. Reception staff did not speak English and it took more than half an hour to get checked in as they were trying to get us to pay in dollars using a terribly disadvantagous exchange rate. We were informed that the single queen bed room we booked on Agoda was not available. We were forced to upgrade to a double queen bed room (for 4 people), and after we paid extra RMB160, we were informed that the room will only be available the next day. We could only stay in a room with a single queen bed along with a wobbly super single bed. On the second day, when we asked to switch to the room we paid extra for, we were told that there are no more double queen bed rooms available. This is clearly dishonesty on the hotel's part.
