Jao Tsung-I was very accomplished in Chinese learning and fine arts. There are three sections in the Jao Tsung-I Academy. The very upper section is up on the hill. With five buildings there they are now serving as the Heritage Lodge, a hotel. In the middle section, the buildings were once the wards for the prisoners and the patients. As the former Lai Chi Kok Hospital, the structures of the Jao Tsung-I Academy were built between 1921 and 1924. All of the structures are of red brick, a common feature for colonial-era buildings in Hong Kong. Due to its history serving as healthcare and prison institutions, including as the quarantine center for infectious deceases, the buildings in the middle and upper sections were reinforced with very heavy layers of concrete and sealed with white paint. Public tours are available for free but signup is required. The Academy is now a venue for cultural and educational activities. There is a coffee shop and a restaurant on site. Parking spot is available for patrons of the restaurants but pre-booking is required. Quite a number of Shatin-bound buses stop at the bus stop right across the street from the Academy.

A surprisingly quiet place in the heart of the city. A nice place for getaways. This heritage site is actually rather small but very beautifully decorated. The restaurant serves good western food (and pizza if you order delivery) and has a nice ambience, though a bit pricey at night. The coffee shop, while quite some distance away from the city, is also a prefect hideout and has the right atmosphere for coffee lovers to chill and relax. Small as they are, the rooms in the hotel are neat, clean and well equipped. The theme-based rooms are a bit more expensive than others but they are worth it. They offer a vibe that other rooms don't have and you have four themes to choose from. Some rooms are even pet-friendly. Apart from the beautiful gardening work, there are also a couple of galleries in the Academy for those who are keen on arts and culture. On the whole, this is a place for those who want a moment of serenity or solitude. For those with kids, this may not be the best place for them.

When a friend of mine and I stood at the Heritage Lodge near the Mei Foo MTR station we learned that this hotel is a part of the area belonging to the Jao Tsung-I Academy. So, naturally we were visiting that area too since the lower level was obviously a tourist attraction for many Chinese travelers. The Jao Tsung-I Academy with the Heritage Lodge had an interesting history as border between the British Kowloon and China including customs station, as prison and several times as a kind of center for disease control and as care facilities. It is very interesting to come here. The entrance is free. Despite the surrounding busy streets it is a quiet place to relax too.

This heritage complex is not too far from Mei Foo Station, and you will feel like you have time traveled to the past from the bustling highways you just walk past. There are three levels of Jao Tsung-I Academy. The lower level has an exhibition showcasing the history of the place and the introduction of Jao Tsung-I. The middle level has more buildings and you can find a restaurant (House of Joy) and a café (Coffee Flow) here. There are more buildings in the middle level and some have pop-up markets from time to time. The upper level is the lodging. So there is not much to see here except the view toward the entire side.

Yesterday, I finally had the opportunity to come to the palatial Jao Tsung-I Academy. It covers an area of 33,000 square feet. The building complex has a history of more than 130 years and one of the first projects under the Hong Kong Government’s “Preservation of Cultural Heritage”, revitalized from the former Lai Chi Kok Hospital, has been used as a customs station, Chinese laborers' quarters, a quarantine station, a prison, a hospital for infectious diseases, and a sanatorium for mental illness. The Jao Tsung-I Academy is divided into High, middle, and Low Zones. There are many scenic spots in the Low Zone, including The Gallery, Heritage Hall, The Pond “Light and Shadow”, and the bronze statue of Professor Jao Tsung-I. There are exhibition halls, resource center & activity rooms, restaurants, theatre, lecture hall & activity rooms, art workshops & conference room, etc. in the Middle Zone; while the cultural heritage lodge and bright hilltop are located in the High Zone. After the visit, the guided tour was with Ivy, an English teacher, and Annie from Taiwan. They are very professional and enthusiastic as the tour guides. A treasure of cultural relics also has its allusions and truths, so let us continue to learn and cultural inheritance.

It’s a nice little area that overlooks the Mei Foo area and has this relaxed and chilled vibe. There are cafes and restaurants. I believe there are events and gatherings being held on the weekends, I guess you can find out on the social media. There are regular exhibitions in the hospital-converted buildings There’s also accommodation on the hills, I wouldn’t call it a hotel. It seems nice but I’d choose a hotel over this. It’s still nice to take a short walk from Mei Foo, enjoy the view and relax a bit.
