We were recommended the Shambala Palace by Tibet Native travel services. We wanted a boutique stay in the centre of the Lhasa Old Town. This really delivered.||The location was ideal, a few streets away from the Barkour and Jokhung Temple as well as key restaurants and shops. This meant we were free to walk around and feel safe and get to know the area.||The hotel itself was stylish and traditional, this is of course very much a Tibetan building with Tibetan decoration and was exactly what we were looking for, but perhaps not to all tastes. it is not bland, white and minimalist.||The staff were immediately welcoming, some members spoke English and others didn't. But when there was a need and English speaking member of the team was found. The hotel had security and made us feel safe and comfortable.||The room was great and had everything we needed from heating and electric blankets as it was a cold time of year. this made for a great nights sleep.||The bathroom would be the only negative area. the toilet, like most in China, does not take toilet roll. the bins were emptied out daily or more so this was good. The shower room was spacious and overall the shower was OK. BUT the water temperature was not consistent. Some mornings, i suppose if other guests where showering, you might not get any hot water. some times you'd get a cool shower and sometimes, at random hours your get a hot shower. We showered super early or around 10pm to ensure we got hot water.||The breakfast was great, simple, made to order and to all tastes, European & Asian.||The hotel offers drinks and restaurant. ||||A top feature of the hotel which is not used enough is the roof terrace. Possibly one of the best in the Old Town. it offers fantastic views over the city, the Potala Palace & the mountains. It was a little cold, but a hot Cha and all would be well. We went over to sister hotel House of Shambala, their roof terrace was nicer but no view... ||||The food was surprisingly excellent, and room service was an option.||||Overall, this was the stay we required and we were made to feel at home. Aside from cold showers, this did the...
Read moreFantastic! Beautiful! Amazing! Can you tell that I loved this place?! The decor is fabulous, both in the public areas and in the rooms - which are gorgeous. A good sized room, with beautiful decoration, comfortable bed, kettle, wifi, slippers, dressing gown, etc. The bathroom was interesting, but a little too cold (in November) for a shower (and we were told not to shower for the first few days at altitude anyway). The room would have been cold, but a heater warmed things up nicely and the humidifier helped stave off the dry cough you can get at altitude.||The rooftop view of Potala Palace took my breath away. I really knew I was in Tibet at this place - it had none of the Chinese 'showy-ness' of some of the modern hotels - it felt like a truly authentic place to stay. The family running it were lovely, they were friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. It felt very homely.||There's no lift (although the owner carried our cases) and the stairs are steep and some of the floors are uneven, so if you have mobility issues, ask for a ground floor room.||The location is wonderful. We spent 4 days here prior to our tour starting and we really enjoyed walking around the car-free lanes surrounding the hotel - as well as Barkhor Street which is just 5 minutes away. Again, we felt like we were really in Tibet - a wonderful atmosphere, safe and friendly, with local families out walking, interesting shops. ||When we transferred to our tour hotel, we were so disappointed! It looked like any other Chinese Hotel and the out-of-town area looked like any Chinese city. However, it did confirm just how special Shambhala...
Read moreWe really enjoyed staying in this Tibetan run hotel. In some ways it reminded us of backpacking days with its quirky furnishings and even quirkier plumbing. It has loads of character with every room different and furnished in an eclectic manner using local materials. The room we stayed in was of a good size. The bathroom was adequate if a little cave-like, and the beds on the hard side. If you like standard en- suite accommodation with gleaming white tiled bathroom, then this place is not for you. But if you do stay here are many delights.||The location in the old town , a short walk ( once you work out the maze of alleys) to Bakhor Square and the Jokhang Temple is unbeatable. There are also a number of restaurants in the area. The roof terrace is a fantastic space with cushions and low tables and a wonderful view across the town to the surrounding mountains and the Portala Palace. A great place for a beer (which is cheap) after a hard days walking. There is also a lovely atmosphere in the main bar/ restaurant on the ground floor. Again a quirky design, with some excellent tasty Tibetan/ Nepalese/Indian/ Chinese food. ||Best of all were the warm and friendly staff. While the English of some was not good, they were always willing to sort things out.||A very enjoyable stay which we will...
