Also known as "Paineis da Taipa", this zigzagging massive concrete panels running up the hill of Taipa are a sculpture complex finished in 1985 memorializing the luso-chinese friendship.
The site is visitable, with spectacular, recommendable views over the city.
It was designed by portuguese sculptor Dorita Castel Branco, and was inspired by the Great Wall of China while depicting in haut-relief everyday life and monuments of Macau. At the time, the complex was not well received by the population for its several million MOP cost in a time of financial difficulty, with the Portuguese community nicknaming it "calhaus da Taipa" [Taipa's stone lump].
The complex entails stairs along the walls, allowing visitors spectacular views of the city. On top, there is a belvedere, a café (permanently closed), restrooms and connects with trekking paths around the hill.
For some time, the complex was let run down. In the 90s, it was renewed and new lighting was installed. In 2016 a new public elevator opened, allowing an easier access between the bottom and top of the hill.
The sculpture's tail-like form is said to depict the tail of the dragon running down the hill accross the bay (the bridge being its body) and landing in front of the Lisboa Hotel, blessing it with its good energies...
