This tour was great. It was just my wife on the tour and I so we basically got a private guide. The guide was great. His English was sometimes tough to understand perfectly but you could always get the gist of it. Some other reviews complain that the tour is not in one of the reserves and it feels like it’s “in someone’s back yard”. Though it is not in a reserve it still goes into some really thick forested areas as well as through some small farm areas and walking paths. If you’ve been in Monteverde at all you will know that you don’t have to go far from anyone’s house to be in thick jungle. It was even more interesting to see the kind of wildlife we did so near the town or some houses. It really shows that these animals really can be found in every day Costa Rica and not just in the protected reserves. All that being said we saw some awesome stuff! Including: sloth, toucan, viper, tarantulas, kinkajou, skunk, scorpions and more. The guide also showed us many cool and interesting plants and gave us information all about them and the Forrest’s. we were a little hesitant because of some of the negative reviews about this tour but honestly it was fantastic. I would highly...
Read moreWas one of the worse tours I did in all Costa Rica. I completely understand that we can’t control the nature, and it’s not in the guide’s power, but the overall experience was underwhelming. As others mention, English was really difficult to understand (and I’ve been to many other tours so have a lot to compare with). it’s not really in the reserve (it felt like it’s someone’s private property?) others in the group saw birds and snakes that the guide has missed (which is…I get it. no one is perfect, but you would expect the guide to lead this). the only thing provided was flashlight. Since I did other tours, I know how much it adds to the experience to have binoculars and telescopes for animals. The animals we saw were quite hard to see in the far.
I was sold this tour as getting the best tour guide in Monteverde with 25yrs of experience, so probably had very high expectations. I appreciate his efforts, but it felt like a bit of waste of time and money for me. I would probably chose to do the night walk in the...
Read moreWe visited Don Rodolfo's night tour following a recommendation from Infocenter Monteverde and we cannot thank them enough for the recommendation. Our guide, Ian, was so knowledgeable about the forest and it was clear his main goal was to help educate the tour participants about the ecosystem, wildlife, and habits of animals. We learned a lot. We knew that night tours have no guarantees, but we saw a lot of wildlife. We saw a tarantula, beetles, scorpions, frogs, snakes, sleeping birds, and a sloth. Don Rodolfo's daughter Maria even joined us on the tour so she could show us a pit-viper she found on a tree. Is it someone's back yard? Yes, but that doesn't mean it isn't the cloud forest and we are so glad we didn't let the negative reviews deter us or we would have missed some incredible learning...
