The fort is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with free admission. The indoor museum has no regular open time and was closed when I visited. The fort is about a kilometer west of the monument, and the city is fairly walkable. No parking is available at the fort. The entrance and interior of the fort is wheelchair accessible, although the ramp is steep. Little signage is available except for the plaques on the statues. The entrance of the fort is guarded by soldiers and police in uniform. While the fort does not have the same glamor as some other Santiago attractions, this is a decent stop for military history enthusiasts.

Construida a principios del siglo XIX, esta fortaleza de tonos amarillos tiene una hermosa y ornamentada puerta exterior con dos cañones que dan a la ciudad. Un puesto de defensa clave durante la Guerra de La Restauración, los marines de EE.UU. también usaron este fuerte como base durante la primera ocupación estadounidense en República Dominicana (1916-1924). Dentro del complejo encontrarás múltiples cañones y tanques del ejército en exhibición, así como las estatuas de los héroes de la independencia dominicana y otras figuras históricas importantes. La fortaleza sirvió como prisión en años posteriores. En 2005, abrió sus puertas un pequeño museo que exhibe numerosos artefactos y objetos culturales taínos, así como pinturas, espadas de la época y fotografías de la ocupación estadounidense.

I didn't visit the museum as they are already closed for the day but I still walked around inside the fort structure and appreciated the peace a few steps outside the bustling city center.

This museum contains indigenous, European, and African artifacts from colonial times. Pues bien, cabe destacar que los agentes del orden de tal unidad no son amable, al visitar quise preguntar dónde queda un departamento y lo que me dijo el agente avance y empecé a dar vuelta dentro hasta dar con lo que necesitaba. Waoo lo que me sorprende es ver la cantidad de vehículos que tienen en tal lugar y que a penas una resolución del tribunal constitucional prohíbe a los agente de la Amet retirar a los viajante sus vehículos y esto no se cumple valla chiste de este poder del Estado!

Sitio historico, donde se puede apreciar edificios y murallas muy antiguas, colección de pinturas, una carcel, un hospital que le llaman el Lirio Y la Lora. El lugar hay una comandancia de Policia así que el sitio es muy seguro. Hay viejos tanques, cañones y armas largas donado por las fuerzas armadas. Seria genial que las restauraran y alargaran su vida. El lugar es muy agradable para visitar y conocer un poco mas de historia. Lo recomiendo

Description
Fortaleza San Luis is located near the Yaque del Norte River in southwest Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. The Fort was the location of several battles during the War of Restoration. Fortaleza San Luis has also served as a Municipal Prison and more recently the fort has been converted into a Museum.
