DR had a very turbulent history - it was switched between the Spanish and Haitian rule, and had to fight for its independence several times. This imposing monument stands proudly in the second biggest DR city. It is dedicated to victims of the Restauration war against Spain which was fought 1863-65 after Spain regained DR shortly after its first independence from Haiti. Entering the ground floor is free, while there's a couple of dollars fee to climb up. The elevator did not work, but it is a very mild climb via spiral staircase through several levels and on each is a museum, diorama and some info on that war. Once on top there're great views of entire city.

If you are in Santiago this is a MUST! A free view of the Santiago City and get the fresh air. If you want to go up into the Monument you'd better were long pants or jeans. Shorts/skirts are not allowed. I used to live here for years and never knew this rule. During thr holidays this place is the Capital of Lights! You have to come and see it yourself. Also is good if you want to exercise during vacations. Get the Horse ride around the area and You'll have the best time! Is something new and fun! Perfect place for all ages! Yo amo mi Ciudad Corazon ♡

Worst experience ever. Last time I went with 2 little cousins and my mom because they where visiting and as soon as we parked (it's supposed to be a free public place) a guy came up to me, gave me some sort of parking ticket and was asking for 100 pesos. I told him this is a public place and he said "good luck with your car, hopefully nothing happens while you are gone". that made me mad and a said a few things to the guy that were not nice. I don't like people threatening me or my family over anything and I don't take that easily. Also, it's full of people asking for money at all times.

If you're in Santiago, it's definitely worth a visit. It's only like $1 to walk up the 365 steps to the viewing area, where you're able to see most of the city as well as the mountains that surround it. They also have displays that tell you about the history of the country - but they're only in Spanish so you'll either need Google Translate or a friend who can speak Spanish to understand what they're talking about. Overall it's very clean and super peaceful (unless there's a school group visiting!).

How spectacular. I went there at different times of the day and not once I wasn't impressed by this monument. Standing on a hill, overlooking the city of Santiago, the monument has a very austere and forceful presence. Go there for the sunset, it's beautiful. In particular, I ran the Monumental Marathon and this is where the finish line is. The monument enters runners' view during the last mile, and it is such an amazing experience running towards it and finishing the marathon by its foot.

An amazing historic place that at the same time is great to chill and relax with friends. At times there will be people tho who are selling beer, that can be a good thing if you like to enjoy your view with one, if not simply say no. At night it's illuminated and imposing. During the day the view is amazing, I recommend you to go up and see the view. Special note, it's good to bring a jacket during fresh nights if you get cold easily!
