This is an amazing and amazingly big castle. And a well-visited one. Surrounded by a huge parkland and gardens. You can easily spend the whole day here. To see the insides as well as the outsides, a day probably won't be enough.
We traveled with our Bulldog, so we came to admire the chateau from the outside and to enjoy some (long) walks in the parkland and gardens. Parking was easy and convenient (Parking Lot 0 - the closest to the castle). Only a 5 Euro fixed rate.
Building began back in 1519 and was only completed in the 17th Century under Louis XIV! After that the setting of the parkland and gardens began and in the 18th Century the setting of the interior. During the Revoution, the chateau was plundered, but luckily wasn't destroyed. 1809 Napeoleon gave this chateau as a gift to maréchal Berthier. It went through different hands after that. During the WWII it was a depot to store arts and crafts. Since 1981 it's a World Heritage Site from UNESCO.
It's quite the impressive architecture. Inside Versailles surely is the more impressive one. But just from the outside, I would say this one beats Versailles.
The gardens are beautiful and there are long walks along the water. It's a very nice thing to do and many visitors actually do so. You could also rent a electric cart or bikes if you prefer. We walked and enjoyed it very much (even though quite hot on that sunny summer day).
Close to the entrance and parking lot are several restaurants and shops. We did enjoy some wine tastings and bought some nice white wine. Souvenir shops and public toilets are located there as well.
There's really a lot of green surrounding the big castle area and is perfect for a nice picnic with picture-perfect castle views. A really great visit and well worth the fair...
Read moreRead moreOkay bro let's be honest, Leonardo da Vinci cook the design of this castle the one of the best castle i seen in my entire life. I gonna put some photos but the castle is way better in real life. It's gives me tears when in saw at the first viewing, you have to see that before your death. I mean the castle is so big, i don't even know why the king need such a big castle but trust me you have to get a entire day to visit this castle,i was there like 6 hours i visit all the castle but the garden is huge that you must rent a golf kart to visit the entire property but that's not very important because the yard is a grass field continues like 5km in front of the castle and 5km in back. Also i was in a theatre that explains the history of the castle and that was fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥there was real hourses real armed comedians and some epics knight battles,i loved that theatre (better than game of thrones😂). I have to say this castle is a peaceful environment and you don't want to get tickets if you are there to stay on the garden or have a picnic. When i was there i felt the power of france the honer, respect and i am sure when you see that castle in real life you gonna say even you are not...
Extremely busy, and obviously very popular. It was very hot - on the day of our visit it was too hot to walk around outside.
Most of the rooms are unfurnished (although faded artwork adorns many walls), leading to the impression that you are walking around looking at a series of empty stone rooms. This isn't what I was expecting.
Some furnishings in the bed chambers remain.
There is an impressive stained glass exhibit which was interesting to see.
The building is more impressive to view from the outside and can be seen up close by climbing the stone staircase and walking out onto the stone balconies.
In addition to the car park fee and subsequent entry fee, we were sold "guides" at €6.50 each and was presented with a heavy tablet (instead of a guide book) with a complicated interface that distracts you as you walk around. You have to locate some contact point in each room and scan it with the tablet for it to start talking about the room you are in. There is no easy way to stop it once it's started its description.
The cafe was over priced, and yet overcrowded.
Security is efficient as we were made to empty our bag and pockets before being allowed in (efficiently treating us...
