La Schappe — Attraction in Briançon

Poised perilously on the southernmost edge of the Vielle Ville right on Place General Blanchard is a half-acre green space (known as the Governor’s Garden) that allows for the finest orientation view over Parc de la Schappe. This park, nestled 400m below the level of the Old Town within Briancon’s most ensnaring gorge is the stuff of dreams. Imagine an oval lake that persistently changes colour, lime to emerald now, malachite to turquoise seconds later. Imagine an endless number of weeping willows that circle the lake and creep down stealthily to the water’s edge. Imagine a minuscule island where swans perch and water fowls migrate for a rest. Imagine a rough-gravelled pathway set high on a row of symmetrical stone arches and along which you can wander freely. Imagine the Durance River flowing with might and main along the deepest and narrowest section of the gorge. Imagine white-water rafters practising their favourite sport, kicking and punting on the rapids. Yes, this is truly the stuff of dreams ... but in Briancon’s Park de la Schappe, it is real as well. You enter the park through a passageway east of Rue Centrale in the Ville Basse or else follow the course of the river eastwards for a couple of minutes. You’ll soon come face to face with the disused building (yes, it’s on your right as you follow the direction of the river) of the former silk mill, a huge dilapidated construction that has obviously seen better days. Steps away you run unexpectedly into the park, finding yourself all of of a sudden right on the lakeside. The park is small and you can walk around the whole area in less than an hour. This is not a park for trekking (there are scores of longer trekking trails in Briancon) but solely for recreation. Once you have digested the spellbound ambience of the lake, you can venture further eastwards along the overgrown gorge to the play area. No bumping cars, no roller coasters, no sophisticated machines to turn you round. The area, thick with overgrown spruce and chestnut is mostly dedicated to bungee jumping, tree climbing (mostly for children) and some more risky (for adults only) ladder-and-rope...

Dans un premier temps, voici mon impression: un havre de paix en pleine ville, en saison; lieu très fréquenté, mais nous y avons été en mi-juin et ce n'était pas le cas, pour notre plus grand bonheur, car nous sommes un peu sauvages il faut le dire et aimons la tranquillité; nous avons apprécié cet instant "nature" avec délice

Dans un deuxième temps, après avoir observé des Canards colverts en liberté, mais ayant un drôle de comportement, je me suis aperçue, en développant mes clichés, que je ne fréquenterais plus ce lieu, même s'il est attractif; en effet, je ne saurais dire si les Colverts sont sauvages - ils sont très méfiant par rapport à la gente humaine - ou en population férale - ils n'ont pas peur des hommes (s'ils le sont, à mi-juin, ils perdent toutes leurs rémiges et ne peuvent donc plus voler; s'ils ne le sont pas et qu'ils ont été éjointés, cela sera pour la vie durant) mais je ne saurais approuver le fait de pratiquer des activités humaines telles que le kayak sur les deux points d'eau, ce qui fait qu'ils doivent s'épuiser à trouver un coin tranquille (faits constatés en ce 15 juin); en dernier ressort, ils se sont réfugiés sur la pelouse où là certains couillons leur courent après pour rire; donc je ne peux cautionner le fait de ne pas leur allouer un coin totalement à eux, à l'abri de toute intervention humaine désespérante

A noter que j'ai demandé à la ville de Briançon ceci le 7 juillet 2018 à notre retour et à ce jour - soit le 13 juillet - toujours pas de réponse de leur part: je leur posais cette question: il me serait agréable d'avoir de vos nouvelles pour savoir si c'est une population sauvage, férale ou...

We had only ever been to the fort & old rown on the hill, so glad I saw this park. We spent a beautiful day in the park . Convenient bar, serves lunch, has restroom and next to Lake. Has a few picnic tables and benchs in the shade as well as in the sun, near the small beach. Hiking trails, playground, zip lines in the trees, paint ball, mini golf.
