Musée départemental des peintres de Barbizon — Attraction in Fontainebleau

Beautiful. This building has been very well reserved. As soon as you turn into the entrance, there is a sense of history. The entrance is made of cobblestone. There was a real sense of days gone by, especially with the various artists’ sketches that remain on the walls in the bedrooms. Each room was set up with authentic furnishing and decor that added to the authentic historical atmosphere. I visited in the summer, so the windows were open. Through the open windows the natural light highlighted the art, and allowed for merciful breezes, and a view to the surrounding rooftops and gardens. The well-kept gardens add to the beauty of this museum. I did not stay for the video presentation that was shown in a small room on the main level, but that was only because I needed to catch my bus on time. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. This is a small museum and does not take a lot of time to get through the whole place. I would definitely recommend it as a part of a day visit to anyone heading to Barbizon. However, I do not recommend visiting on a Monday. Almost all of the shops and attractions are closed, so it feels like a ghost town. The Musee Des Peintres de Barbizon was one of the few attractions that was open for visitors on the Monday that I was there.

Ce bâtiment a été très bien réservé. Dès que vous tournez dans l'entrée, il y a un sens de l'histoire. L'entrée est en pavé uni. Il y avait un vrai sens du temps passé, notamment avec les différents croquis d'artistes qui restent sur les murs des chambres. Chaque chambre a été aménagée avec un mobilier et une décoration authentiques qui ajoutent à l'atmosphère historique authentique. J'ai visité en été, donc les fenêtres étaient ouvertes. À travers les fenêtres ouvertes, la lumière naturelle mettait en valeur l'art et permettait des brises miséricordieuses et une vue sur les toits et les jardins environnants. Les jardins bien entretenus ajoutent à la beauté de ce musée. Je ne suis pas resté pour la présentation vidéo qui a été montrée dans une petite pièce au niveau principal, mais c'était uniquement parce que je devais prendre mon bus à l'heure. Le personnel était très accueillant et sympathique. C'est un petit musée et il ne faut pas beaucoup de temps pour parcourir tout l'endroit. Je le recommanderais sans hésiter dans le cadre d'une visite d'une journée à tous ceux qui se rendent à Barbizon. Cependant, je ne recommande pas de visiter un lundi. Presque tous les magasins et attractions sont fermés, on a donc l'impression d'être dans une ville fantôme. Le Musée Des Peintres de Barbizon était l'une des rares attractions ouvertes aux visiteurs le lundi...

Such a wonderful museum; a real hidden gem of the Paris region! It felt so momentous to be viewing important works of art in such intimate and authentic surroundings. And to visit the old auberge that was the backdrop to this major art movement. I can't believe I haven't visited before this, but will definitely go back many times for this unique immersive experience. The little film that is shown is well...

This is a wonderful, small museum based in a former auberge where painters of the Barbizon School stayed. You can see where they decorated many of the surfaces in the dining rooms and where they doodled in the dormitory rooms. Also a display of paintings by a number of artists. Explanations are only in French, but there are English subtitles on a short video that is well worth watching. We loved...
