Le Gaulois Barbizon — Restaurant in Fontainebleau

My aunt and I have been regular customer for 20 years. It has changed ownership on 1 april 2025. Everything has changed even though the chief has stayed along.

Not the same ambiance, service and food quality. Waited longer than normal for menu- 15 + min plus waited long to get meal. We ordered " tete de veau" and chicken- veg plater with egg/mayo. Tete de veau was very good, except it had a black hair in the meat. See pic. I informed waiter who did not say a word. Chicken with Vegs was terrible. Chicken leg was dry no taste. And veg was soaked in some sauce. We complained to owner.

So there is no comparison between old owner and new owners. I will not return.

No apologies, not customer oriented.

They could of offered coffee etc. Which would of only costs them .50 euro cents . A small gesture and apology would of been nice. This did...

Almost worth the journey to Barbizon on its own!

Reservation for lunch was super smooth, the evening before on WhatsApp (ask for “exterieur” for their lovely outdoor space ).

Portions are BIG, which prepare one for the 10km walk in the forest if that’s your thing.

Started with the terrines combo (enough for 3), the carpaccio and the bourguignon were great too.

I did not see many veg options but not that uncommon for classic French fare outside of cities.

Had dinner at Le Gaulois a couple of days ago and was completely blown away by the service and the food. The restaurant is located in the charming village of Barbizon and has a cozy feel to it. We basically ordered half of the menu items and kept asking for more. We tried the below: Onion soup, bone marrow, escargots, foie gras, chevre chaud salad and entrecote for the main course.
